Woman Arrested for Throwing Newborn Into Toilet Drain

Mohali: Police have arrested a woman accused of disposing of her newborn by throwing the infant into a toilet drain after giving birth in the bathroom of the emergency ward at Mohali civil hospital.

Investigation Reveals Concealed Pregnancy

The accused, a Chandigarh resident, was taken into custody following an investigation which revealed that she had allegedly concealed her pregnancy from her family. Police said she was in a relationship with a man who later ended the relationship.

Incident Details

According to officials, the woman visited the civil hospital on April 18 along with her brother, complaining of stomach pain. She reportedly did not disclose her pregnancy to doctors. During her stay in the emergency ward, she went to the bathroom, where she delivered the baby, and is alleged to have thrown the newborn into the toilet drain before leaving the hospital without informing anyone.

The incident came to light later in the afternoon when a sanitation worker, Urmila, noticed blockage in the bathroom drainage and reported it to her supervisor, Surinder, who then called a sewerage worker. During the cleaning of the pipeline, the newborn was found, triggering alarm among hospital staff. The infant was immediately taken to the emergency ward, where doctors declared him dead.

Police Action

Phase 6 police initially registered a case against an unidentified woman and launched an investigation. By scrutinising hospital records, CCTV footage and patient details from that day, police were able to identify and subsequently arrest the accused.

Further investigation is underway, including verification of the alleged role of the man involved, besides examination of other aspects linked to the case, police said.
