West Bengal Minorities Commission Launches Investigation Into Teenager's Tragic Death
The West Bengal Minorities Commission (WBMC) has officially initiated a comprehensive probe into the heartbreaking death of 14-year-old Charanjeet Kaur in Siliguri. This significant intervention by the commission was triggered by a formal complaint that alleges severe medical negligence coupled with financial exploitation during what should have been a life-saving medical emergency.
Details of the Medical Emergency and Alleged Deception
According to the detailed complaint filed with the commission, Charanjeet Kaur was admitted to a nursing home in Siliguri on January 1, 2026, suffering from severe respiratory complications. Her condition was later diagnosed as acute pneumonia, a serious and potentially fatal illness. As her health deteriorated rapidly, medical professionals at the facility advised an urgent transfer to a more advanced medical center capable of providing specialized care.
During this critical and time-sensitive window, the family was allegedly approached by an insurance agent identified as Santosh Gupta. Gupta reportedly claimed he could arrange an emergency air ambulance service from Bagdogra Airport to Chennai for a substantial fee of Rs 18 lakh. He allegedly provided assurances to the distressed family that this entire amount would be fully reimbursed by their insurance company at a later date.
In a desperate attempt to save their daughter's life, the family managed to gather Rs 12.5 lakh in cash, which they handed over to Gupta based on his promises. Tragically, the family later discovered that no air ambulance had ever been booked or arranged by Gupta. This devastating deception resulted in critical delays in obtaining proper medical intervention for Charanjeet. The young girl ultimately succumbed to her illness on January 4, 2026, leaving her family shattered by grief and betrayal.
Additional Allegations Against Law Enforcement
The complaint further contains serious allegations against local law enforcement officials. The family claims that police officers, including Investigating Officer Abir Kr Dhar and In-Charge Officer Amit Adhikari, provided wrongful guidance and exerted pressure on them to provide weak and false statements while they were still in the immediate aftermath of their tragic loss and deep mourning period.
Commission's Response and Administrative Actions
WBMC member Satnam Singh Ahluwalia has taken proactive steps in response to this case. He conducted a detailed meeting with Siliguri Police Commissioner C Sudhakar and other senior police officers to address the allegations and ensure proper investigation procedures. Additionally, Ahluwalia formally apprised Jalpaiguri District Magistrate, IAS officer Shama Parveen, of the entire situation to guarantee that the bereaved family receives all necessary administrative assistance and support during this difficult time.
The family expressed both their profound grief and cautious relief at the commission's intervention. "The loss of our beloved daughter has completely shattered our family," said Rabinder Singh, Charanjeet's father. "However, we feel somewhat reassured that as soon as the necessary complaint was formally filed, the West Bengal Minorities Commission took immediate cognisance of the matter and initiated this investigation."
This case highlights critical issues surrounding medical ethics, insurance fraud vulnerabilities, and the protection of minority communities during times of crisis.
