Wayanad & Thrissur: New School Violence Cases Reported

Wayanad and Thrissur Witness Disturbing Cases of Student Assaults

In a concerning trend of youth violence, two separate incidents involving minors have been reported in Kerala, with one occurring in Wayanad district and another in Thrissur. These events follow a recent assault on a 16-year-old student in Kalpetta, raising alarms about safety in educational environments.

Brutal Attack on 14-Year-Old in Wayanad

On Tuesday afternoon, a 14-year-old Class X student from Muttil WMO School was allegedly assaulted by a group of fellow students near Kaniyambatta Village Office Road in Wayanad. According to police and family accounts, the boy was lured to the location and then subjected to a violent attack. He was beaten, pushed into a thorn fence, and stomped on, with blows also directed at his head during the ordeal.

The victim managed to escape and run home, after which he was admitted to Kalpetta Government Hospital for medical treatment. His mother reported that his school uniform was torn from being pulled violently, and he sustained injuries to his neck, chest, and back, with multiple wounds from the thorn fence. She further alleged that the assailants recorded the assault on mobile phones but deleted the footage after a police complaint was filed.

Kambalakkad police have registered a case and are actively investigating the incident to identify and apprehend those responsible.

Earlier Assault in Kalpetta Leads to Arrests

In connection with a prior incident on January 21, where a 16-year-old student was assaulted in Kalpetta, police have taken action. Mohammed Nafil, aged 18, has been arrested, and three minor students have been booked for their involvement in the attack.

Thrissur Incident: Four Arrested for Festival-Related Assault

Separately, in Thrissur, rural police have arrested four individuals for severely assaulting and injuring a 16-year-old boy following a dispute over a trivial issue. The altercation occurred during a festival at the Sree Subramanya Swamy Temple in Arimpur on January 25, when the boy pushed away one of the accused who fell on him while dancing.

Visuals of the attack circulated widely on social media, drawing public attention to the case. The arrested individuals have been identified as Chennamkulam Veettil Sreeshnav (20), Nangeliveettil Smijin (19), Mangattuveettil Sreehari (19), and Kannoliveettil Rajesh (19), all residents of Arimpur and surrounding areas.

Police stated that the accused assaulted the boy with their hands and sticks, and also insulted him using obscene language and calling his caste name, adding a layer of discrimination to the violence.

These incidents underscore a growing concern over youth violence and bullying in Kerala, prompting calls for stricter measures and community awareness to protect minors. Authorities continue to investigate both cases to ensure justice and prevent future occurrences.
