Vizag Police Implement Strict New Speed Limits Across City

The Visakhapatnam city police have rolled out comprehensive new speed restrictions for vehicles on multiple key stretches, including major highways and the scenic Beach Road. This decisive move aims to significantly reduce the risk of road accidents in high-risk areas while ensuring smoother traffic movement on congested corridors.

Uniform 40 kmph Limit on Critical Routes

Under the newly enforced regulations, a consistent speed cap of 40 kilometers per hour has been mandated for several vital thoroughfares. This includes the entire NH 16 corridor stretching from Kurmannapalem Junction to Kommadi Junction, as well as the picturesque Beach Road segments from Fishing Harbour to Bheemili, passing through Sagarnagar and Rushikonda.

Additionally, all municipal roads within the city limits and the Bus Rapid Transit System (BRTS) corridors—specifically from Adavivaram to Vepagunta and from Baji Junction to Kancharapalem Mettu—will now adhere to this 40 kmph limit.

Variable Speed Caps on Other Major Stretches

The police have established differentiated maximum speed limits for other significant routes to balance safety and efficiency. Vehicles can travel at up to 70 kmph on the stretch from Rajapulova to Pinagadi via the Pendurthi-NH-16 bypass road, while a 60 kmph limit applies from Mopada to RK Township on NH-26 road.

Furthermore, a 50 kmph speed ceiling has been imposed on five crucial stretches:

  • From E-Marripalem (Parawada) to Kurmannapalem on NH-16 road
  • From Kommadi to Anandapuram on NH-16 road
  • From Pendurthi to Baji Junction on BRTS road
  • From Hanumanthuwaka to Adavivaram on BRTS road
  • From Convent Junction to Sheelanagar on Port Road

To enhance driver awareness and compliance, authorities are installing new speed limit signboards at prominent locations throughout the city.

Enhanced Enforcement with Advanced Technology

ADCP (Traffic) K Praveen Kumar emphasized that the police are bolstering enforcement capabilities with the induction of three advanced speed laser guns and an upgraded CCTV surveillance network. These tools will enable intensified drives to identify traffic violators and impose penalties effectively.

The advanced laser-based speed detection devices will be strategically deployed at multiple locations to monitor violations in real-time, Kumar stated, underscoring the commitment to rigorous oversight.

Strict Penalties for Traffic Violations

Kumar detailed the consequences for non-compliance, which include substantial fines and potential license suspensions. Key violations and their penalties under the Motor Vehicles Act are:

  1. Over-speeding (Section 183): Fine of Rs 1,000 with a recommendation for driving license suspension.
  2. Triple riding (Section 194 C): Fine of Rs 1,000 with a recommendation for driving license suspension.
  3. Riding without a helmet (Section 194 D): Fine of Rs 1,000 with a recommendation for driving license suspension.
  4. Riding without a helmet for pillion (Section 194 C): Fine of Rs 1,000 with a recommendation for driving license suspension.
  5. Wrong route driving (Section 184): More serious offence attracting a penalty of Rs 1,500 and similar suspension proceedings.

This comprehensive framework is designed to deter reckless driving and promote a culture of road safety in Visakhapatnam.
