Varanasi Police Apprehend Two Robbers in Dramatic Encounter, Third Suspect Escapes
In a significant breakthrough, the Azamgarh police successfully arrested two members of a notorious inter-district robbery gang following a tense encounter on Monday. The operation, however, saw one of their accomplices manage to flee the scene, evading capture for the time being. The arrested individuals sustained leg injuries during the confrontation and were promptly transported to a local hospital for necessary medical treatment.
Recovered Evidence Points to Criminal Activities
Law enforcement officials recovered a substantial cache of evidence from the scene, underscoring the gang's illicit operations. The seized items include two illegal country-made pistols, two missed cartridges, two empty cartridge shells, a motorcycle used in the crimes, and a gold chain believed to be stolen property. This recovery is pivotal in linking the suspects to multiple criminal incidents across the region.
Investigation Triggered by Gold Chain Snatching Complaint
The case originated from a complaint filed by a woman at the Kandharapur police station on March 26. She reported that her gold chain was forcibly snatched near Bijaura Colony while she was returning from the Bhawarnath Temple. City Circle Officer Shubham Todi confirmed that a formal case was registered immediately, leading to intensive and continuous raids aimed at apprehending the perpetrators.
Subsequent investigations revealed that the accused were actively involved in a series of theft, robbery, and snatching incidents not only in Azamgarh but also in neighboring districts such as Ghazipur and surrounding areas. Their criminal network spanned multiple jurisdictions, making them a priority target for local law enforcement.
Encounter Unfolds Near Chandra Rishi Ashram
Acting on a credible tip-off regarding the movement of these inter-district criminals from Kishundaspur towards Kamhenpur, a specialized police team, led by Inspector in Charge Anurag Kumar, swiftly cordoned off the area near a culvert close to the Chandra Rishi Ashram. Upon spotting the police presence, the accused attempted a hasty escape, resulting in their motorcycle skidding and crashing into a ditch.
Cornered and desperate, the three suspects took refuge behind bushes and opened fire at the approaching police officers. In a measured retaliatory action, the police responded, leading to two of the accused sustaining injuries. Despite the police's efforts, one suspect managed to slip away from the location, exploiting the chaotic situation.
Identities of the Arrested and Absconding Suspects
The two arrested robbers have been identified as Shivam Sahani, alias Anurag, and Raj Nishad, both residents of Rahul Nagar Madya within the Kotwali police station area of Azamgarh. The absconding individual, Chhotu Singh, is a resident of Ghazipur district. Authorities have intensified search operations to locate and apprehend Singh, emphasizing the ongoing nature of this investigation.
