Varanasi New Year 2026: Major Traffic Diversions Announced for Crowd Control
Varanasi Announces Traffic Plan for New Year 2026 Celebrations

In preparation for the massive influx of devotees and revellers expected for New Year 2026, the Varanasi Commissionerate Police has rolled out an extensive traffic diversion plan. The restrictions, deemed essential for public safety and smooth movement, will be in effect from Monday, December 30, 2025, through Sunday, January 5, 2026.

Key Traffic Restrictions and No-Vehicle Zones

To manage the anticipated crowds heading towards the iconic Ganga ghats, the police have declared several critical areas as strict no-vehicle zones. The entire stretch from Maidagin to Godowlia and onward to Jangambadi will be completely closed for all vehicular movement. Furthermore, all routes connected to the bustling Godowlia intersection will also be inaccessible to vehicles.

If the crowd swells beyond expectations on December 31, vehicles arriving from other cities and districts will be prohibited from proceeding towards the ghats. They will be directed to stop only at designated parking locations. Assistant Commissioner of Police (Traffic) Somveer Singh personally reviewed the arrangements on Sunday evening across key points including Maidagin, Visheshwarganj, Kajjakapura, and Namo Ghat.

Designated Parking for Large and Small Vehicles

The authorities have identified specific parking spots to prevent congestion. Large vehicles, such as buses and trucks, will be accommodated near Sampurnanand Sanskrit Vishwavidyalaya, Padmashree Chauraha in Ravindrapuri, near Chaukaghat, and near Lahartara.

For smaller vehicles, the primary parking facility will be the Townhall parking lot located at Beniya, Maidagin. The police have also issued strict instructions to e-rickshaw and auto-rickshaw drivers, who often park on roads to pick up passengers, to adhere to the rules to avoid blockages.

Additional Diversions and Route Closures

The traffic plan includes further proactive measures. The movement of all types of four-wheeler and large vehicles will remain closed towards areas like Lahurabir, Maidagin, Visheshwarganj, and Golgadda. Their access will also be restricted towards Broadway Tiraha, Agrawal Tiraha, Sonarpura, and Godowlia.

ADCP Traffic Anshuman Mishra clarified that if traffic pressure mounts, vehicle movement on the Gurubag-Laksa route will also be halted. This layered diversion strategy is specifically designed for effective crowd management during the peak celebration period.

Advisory for Citizens and Helpline Numbers

The Varanasi police have earnestly requested all citizens and vehicle drivers to cooperate by following the announced traffic rules and using only the designated parking spots. In case of any inconvenience or for traffic-related queries, individuals can contact the dedicated helplines:
