Vadodara's Janmahal Bus Depot Facade Collapse Claims Life, Triggers Safety Investigation
A tragic incident unfolded at Vadodara's prominent State Transport (ST) bus depot, widely known as 'Janmahal', on Friday when a section of its decorative plaster of paris (PoP) facade suddenly gave way. The collapse resulted in the death of a 60-year-old pedestrian and has ignited serious concerns regarding the structural integrity of one of the city's most frequented transportation centers.
Fatal Collapse Near Entrance Gate
The victim, identified as Narsinh Dave, a resident of Ahmedabad, was walking past the depot building close to the entrance gate in the Sayajigunj locality. Without warning, the PoP structure along with an attached metal framework crashed down upon him, leading to his immediate demise at the scene.
A major catastrophe was narrowly avoided, given the depot's immense daily foot traffic. Thousands of passengers continuously move through the premises, making the timing of the collapse particularly alarming. The sudden event caused widespread panic, with passengers scrambling towards exits in a frantic bid for safety.
Emergency Response and Immediate Aftermath
Senior police officials and fire brigade teams swiftly arrived at the location, launching a comprehensive rescue operation. Fire personnel worked diligently to clear the debris, eventually recovering Dave's body from the wreckage.
"A portion of the PoP structure fell with a loud crash," recounted a police official, highlighting the abrupt and violent nature of the incident.
In response, authorities have registered a case of accidental death and pledged a thorough investigation to determine the exact cause. A segment of the depot has been cordoned off as a precautionary measure, with an alternative route established for bus operations to minimize disruption.
Scrutiny on Depot's Construction and Safety
The Janmahal depot, constructed in 2014 at an estimated cost of Rs 114 crore, was developed under a public-private partnership between the Gujarat State Road Transport Corporation (GSRTC) and Cube Construction. This modern facility is not merely a transit point; it incorporates commercial spaces such as shops, a multiplex, and an exhibition hall.
Daily, the depot accommodates approximately 35,000 passengers and manages around 900 buses, underscoring its critical role in the region's transportation network. The collapse has thrust the safety of its exterior architecture into the spotlight, prompting urgent evaluations.
Comprehensive Technical Investigations Underway
Multiple agencies have mobilized to probe the incident. Teams from the Gujarat Engineering Research Institute (GERI) and the Forensic Science Laboratory (FSL) have collected debris samples from the site for detailed analysis. Concurrently, a technical team from GSRTC has initiated its own inquiry to ascertain the factors leading to the structural failure.
This coordinated effort aims to uncover any lapses in construction, maintenance, or design that may have contributed to the tragedy, with findings expected to inform future safety protocols for similar infrastructures across the state.
