Massive Blaze at Vadodara Commercial Complex Forces Swift Evacuation of 400
A major fire erupted at a nine-storey commercial building in Vadodara's Gotri area on Wednesday afternoon, triggering widespread panic but resulting in a miraculous evacuation of nearly 400 occupants without any injuries. The incident occurred at Iscon Atria, a prominent commercial complex on Gotri main road that houses approximately 40 offices, many of which are information technology (IT) firms.
Suspected Electrical Fault Ignites Rapid Inferno
Preliminary investigations by fire officials point to an electrical short circuit as the likely cause of the blaze. The fire broke out around 3:30 PM on the sixth floor, initially appearing manageable but quickly escalating into a full-scale emergency. Vivek Sapkal, an employee on the first floor, described the terrifying sequence: "At first, it seemed like a minor incident, and we used a fire extinguisher to douse the flames. However, within minutes, the fire flared up violently and spread at an alarming rate. Hearing screams, I stepped out to find smoke engulfing the area and immediately urged my colleagues and others to evacuate."
Chaotic Scenes as Occupants Flee Thick Smoke
As the fire intensified, thick black smoke rapidly enveloped the entire building, creating chaotic scenes as people rushed to safety. Former councillor Rajesh Ayre, who arrived after being alerted by friends, recounted: "I witnessed panicked individuals frantically descending the floors while smoke continued to billow out. It was a harrowing sight." Despite the urgency, all occupants managed to exit the building independently or with assistance before the flames could spread further across the upper levels.
Firefighting Efforts and Alleged Delays
Fire brigade teams responded swiftly, with multiple tenders arriving at the scene within 15 minutes of the alarm. However, allegations surfaced regarding delays in deploying specialized equipment. Ayre claimed that the hydraulic elevated platform vehicle took over half an hour to arrive due to the unavailability of its driver. In total, around 15 fire vehicles and more than 40 firefighters were mobilized, using over two lakh litres of water to combat the blaze, which raged for several hours. Firefighters also had to break sections of the building's glass façade to release trapped smoke.
Safety Systems Under Scrutiny
Occupants and business owners raised serious concerns about fire safety lapses in the complex. They alleged that the fire alarm system failed to activate during the initial outbreak, and the sprinkler system did not engage. One office owner stated: "We haven't conducted a fire safety drill in this building for a long time, which likely contributed to the confusion." In contrast, estate manager Mitesh Patel asserted that Iscon Atria holds a valid fire No Objection Certificate (NOC) and adheres to safety protocols, though the exact cause remains under investigation.
Extensive Damage and Official Statements
The fire severely impacted the top three floors of the building, with offices on these levels reportedly gutted. Amish Sheth, a fifth-floor employee, confirmed the extensive damage. Fire officials, including in-charge chief officer Harendrasinh Chauhan, noted that the affected floors were largely unoccupied at the time, preventing potential casualties. Chauhan emphasized: "Prima facie, an electrical short circuit appears to be the culprit. Fortunately, most offices on the upper floors were closed, and all occupants had evacuated safely before the fire could escalate further."
This incident underscores critical issues in urban fire safety management, prompting calls for stricter enforcement of regulations and regular drills to prevent future tragedies.
