In a shocking revelation, Jalandhar Rural Police have uncovered that the December 19 killing of a Shahkot man was masterminded by a Non-Resident Indian (NRI) based in the United States. The police announced on Tuesday that the US-based individual hired contract killers to execute the murder.
Marriage Triggers a Deadly Plot
The victim, identified as Sandeep Kumar (33), who worked at a junkyard in Shahkot, was murdered last month. Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) H S Virk stated that the investigation, which relied on human intelligence and technical surveillance, pointed to a personal motive. The SSP revealed that the victim's recent marriage to a woman named Kajal became the reason for his murder.
According to the police, the prime conspirator, Jagpreet Singh, originally from Rajewal village in Shahkot, was allegedly involved with Kajal before he moved to the US. Jagpreet was reportedly against Kajal's marriage to Sandeep, commonly known as Sonu, and plotted his elimination from abroad.
Shooter Arrested, Weapon Recovered
Acting on the gathered intelligence, the police focused on Sher Singh alias Shera, a resident of Rajewal village. He was arrested on Monday. During the arrest, the police made a critical recovery: the 9mm Zigana pistol made in Turkey that was used in the crime.
SSP Virk detailed that during preliminary interrogation, the arrested accused, Sher Singh, confessed to committing the murder. He admitted to acting on the instructions of his friend, Jagpreet Singh, who had promised to pay him Rs 2 lakh for carrying out the killing. Based on this confession and evidence, the police had already named Jagpreet Singh in the First Information Report (FIR).
Criminal Past and Ongoing Probe
Further interrogation of the arrested shooter revealed his involvement in another serious crime. Sher Singh was found to be connected to an attempted murder case registered last month at the Phillaur police station. This discovery paints a picture of a seasoned individual engaged in violent activities.
The Jalandhar police are now intensifying their efforts to build a solid case and explore legal avenues to bring the US-based alleged mastermind, Jagpreet Singh, to justice. The case highlights a grim trend of transnational crime orchestrated from overseas, challenging local law enforcement agencies.
