Uttar Pradesh Police Launch Major Crackdown on Hazardous Chinese Manja

In a significant enforcement action, police forces across Uttar Pradesh have executed a comprehensive special drive targeting the illegal manufacture, storage, use, and sale of banned Chinese manja and synthetic, glass-coated nylon kite strings. This coordinated operation was initiated following explicit directives from the Allahabad High Court, the National Green Tribunal, and the Uttar Pradesh government, underscoring the multi-agency approach to addressing this public safety hazard.

Extensive Inspections Yield Substantial Seizures

According to official data released by authorities, enforcement teams conducted rigorous inspections at 117 warehouses and an impressive 11,899 shops throughout the week-long campaign. The drive proved highly effective, resulting in the seizure of a large quantity of illegal synthetic manja and glass-coated nylon strings. The confiscated materials have been valued at approximately Rs 1.93 lakh, highlighting the scale of the illicit trade operating within the state.

Legal Action and Arrests Follow Violations

Police authorities registered 14 First Information Reports (FIRs) in connection with the various violations uncovered during the drive. A total of 13 accused individuals were specifically named in these cases, with one additional person identified during the subsequent investigation process. All 13 named accused have been arrested, demonstrating the serious legal consequences for those involved in the banned kite string trade.

Statewide Enforcement Mandate Issued

Authorities confirmed that strict instructions were issued to all police commissioners and district police chiefs across Uttar Pradesh to ensure a complete and effective ban on the sale and use of these hazardous kite strings. The directive emphasizes that these materials pose serious risks to public safety, particularly during festive seasons when kite flying activities increase dramatically. The synthetic, glass-coated strings have been responsible for numerous injuries and fatalities to humans, birds, and animals due to their sharp, non-biodegradable nature.

The enforcement drive represents a proactive measure by Uttar Pradesh authorities to combat environmental hazards and protect citizens from dangerous materials that have been officially prohibited. The involvement of judicial and environmental bodies like the Allahabad High Court and National Green Tribunal adds legal weight to the crackdown, ensuring compliance with existing regulations and court orders regarding hazardous substances.
