Uttar Pradesh Man Arrested for Attempted ATM Theft in Chennai's Vyasarpadi
A 23-year-old man from Uttar Pradesh was arrested in Chennai for attempting to steal cash from an SBI ATM in Vyasarpadi by blocking the cash-dispensing slot using a metal plate attached with adhesive tape. The incident occurred on Tuesday at around 3pm, highlighting a concerning trend of ATM-related crimes in urban areas.
Engineers Uncover Suspicious Activity
Engineers Sam Joshua and Kumaran from a private company arrived at the ATM to address a technical complaint when they noticed the cash-dispensing slot was obstructed by a small iron plate fixed with tape. Suspecting foul play, the vigilant engineers decided to wait outside the ATM kiosk to monitor the situation.
Confrontation and Arrest
Shortly after, a man entered the kiosk, pretended to withdraw money, and exited. The engineers immediately questioned him and inspected the bag he was carrying. Inside, they found adhesive tape identical to the type used to block the cash slot. Acting swiftly, the engineers detained the suspect and informed the local police.
Upon investigation, police seized 16,300 rupees in cash and the adhesive tape used in the robbery attempt. The accused was identified as Veer Bahadur, a 23-year-old native of Uttar Pradesh. This arrest underscores the importance of public vigilance and prompt action in preventing financial crimes.
Broader Implications for ATM Security
This incident raises questions about ATM security measures in Chennai and other metropolitan cities. Authorities are urging banks and financial institutions to enhance surveillance and implement stricter protocols to deter such attempts.
