In a major push for road safety during the festive period, Udupi district police launched a rigorous special enforcement drive targeting traffic violators. The operation, aimed at curbing accidents during New Year and Christmas celebrations, spanned from December 24 to January 3.

Massive Scale of Enforcement

The police department set up a formidable network of 29 checkposts across the district to monitor vehicular movement. A dedicated team of officers was deployed for this intensive campaign, which resulted in a significant number of penalties.

During the ten-day drive, authorities registered a staggering total of 1,199 cases for various traffic offences. The collective fines imposed on violators amounted to a substantial Rs 9.6 lakh, highlighting the scale of the crackdown.

Breakdown of Traffic Violations

The registered cases covered a range of dangerous and common violations. The most frequent offence was riding without helmets, which accounted for 803 cases. Driving without seat belts was the second most common infraction, with 243 cases booked.

In a serious focus on preventing accidents, the police identified and penalized 103 individuals for drunken driving. Other notable violations included 35 cases of triple riding on two-wheelers and 15 cases of using mobile phones while driving.

This special drive was part of the police's intensified road safety measures for the holiday season. By taking strict action against offenders, the Udupi police aimed to send a strong deterrent message to the public.
