Tragic Accident Claims Lives of Two Sisters in Pune
A devastating road accident in Pune's Kalewadi area has resulted in the deaths of two sisters. The incident occurred on Wednesday afternoon when a goods-carrying truck struck their two-wheeler from behind.
Details of the Fatal Collision
Police reported the accident happened around 1:15 pm near Rahatani Phata. The sisters were riding a moped on the road connecting Tapkir Chowk to Kalewadi Phata. Initial information suggests the bike may have attempted to overtake the truck, though authorities are still verifying the exact sequence of events.
After the impact, both women fell from their vehicle and suffered severe head injuries. Medical personnel pronounced them dead at the scene. The truck driver immediately stopped his vehicle following the collision.
Victims Identified as Young Students
Police have identified the deceased as Rutuja Pandurang Shinde, aged 24, and her younger sister Neha, aged 20. Rutuja had recently graduated from law college, while Neha was pursuing her education. An officer from Kalewadi police station stated the sisters were traveling to a nearby market for shopping when the tragedy occurred.
Driver Detained and Vehicle Impounded
Authorities have detained the truck driver, identified as Jitendra Nirale, a native of Madhya Pradesh. Nirale had transported a load of lentils from Nagpur and was returning after unloading the cargo. Police have impounded the truck involved in the accident for further investigation.
Rising Trend of Heavy Vehicle Accidents
Both Pune and Pimpri Chinchwad police have reported numerous accidents involving heavy vehicles hitting two-wheelers, often with fatal consequences. Despite bans on heavy vehicle movement in many city areas, these vehicles continue to operate on Pune roads.
With penalties proving ineffective and serious accidents mounting, Pune City Traffic Police have begun invoking stringent charges. Over November and December last year, they registered 102 cases under Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita section 110, which pertains to attempt to commit culpable homicide.
Traffic authorities say they have no option but to take strong action against operators of dumpers, mixers, and other heavy vehicles violating movement bans. The tragic death of these two sisters highlights the ongoing safety concerns on Pune's roads.
