Details of the Fatal Collision
According to police reports, the accident unfolded when a morang-laden trailer was stationed at the zero point. Simultaneously, another trailer was passing alongside it. At that critical moment, a high-speed empty trailer coming from the Kalesar direction rammed head-on into an oncoming tempo. The force of the impact was so severe that the tempo was completely crushed between the two larger vehicles, trapping its occupants inside.
Victims and Rescue Efforts
The deceased have been identified as 18-year-old Pratima, daughter of Sanjay Paswan from Nuruddin Chak under the Campierganj police station, and 35-year-old Srikant, the tempo driver and a resident of Turkwalia under the Pipiganj police station. Police teams from Pipiganj and Chiluatala rushed to the scene immediately upon receiving the alert.
A large-scale rescue operation was launched, utilizing two cranes, a JCB, and gas cutters to extricate the mangled vehicle and its trapped passengers. Despite the swift response, by the time the victims were pulled out, both Pratima and Srikant had succumbed to their injuries. The three injured persons, including the trailer driver, were rushed to a nearby hospital, where they are currently undergoing treatment. Their conditions are being closely monitored.
Traffic Disruption and Aftermath
The accident caused significant disruption on the busy Gorakhpur–Sonauli highway. Traffic remained halted for several hours as authorities worked to clear the wreckage and complete the rescue operations. The incident has raised serious concerns about road safety and speeding on this crucial highway route.
Local authorities are investigating the exact cause of the crash, with preliminary reports suggesting excessive speed as a likely factor. This tragic event underscores the urgent need for enhanced safety measures and stricter enforcement of traffic regulations to prevent such fatalities in the future.
