Chandigarh witnessed two tragic road accidents within 24 hours, claiming the lives of a young student and a senior citizen. Police have registered separate First Information Reports (FIRs) against the drivers involved in both incidents.
BTech Student Succumbs After Bike-Car Collision
In the first incident, a 20-year-old BTech student lost his life. The victim has been identified as Abhinav Sharma, a resident of Sector 19 in Chandigarh. According to a complaint filed by his friend Sagar, also a BTech student and resident of Khuda Lahora, the accident occurred on January 7.
Sagar stated that he and Abhinav were traveling on a motorcycle towards Sector 15. A car driver allegedly took a sudden and unexpected turn, causing the two-wheeler to collide with the vehicle. Passersby immediately alerted the police, and both youths were rushed to the Government Multi-Specialty Hospital in Sector 16 (GMSH-16).
While Sagar sustained injuries, Abhinav, who was riding pillion, was in critical condition. He was referred to the Post Graduate Institute of Medical Education and Research (PGI), where he later succumbed to his injuries. The Sarangpur police have registered a case and investigation is ongoing.
Senior Citizen Hit by Speeding Car in Sector 41
In a separate and unrelated accident, a 63-year-old woman died after being hit by a speeding car. The victim was Uma Verma, a resident of Sector 40, Chandigarh.
The incident came to light when Parveen, a senior constable posted at the Sector 39 police station, was patrolling the area near Sector 41 market with a colleague. They reported seeing a grey Maruti Baleno car coming at high speed from the direction of Sector 41.
The vehicle hit Uma Verma, who was standing on the roadside near the dividing road of sectors 40 and 41. A Police Control Room (PCR) van rushed the woman to GMSH-16, where doctors declared her dead on arrival.
Police Action and Investigations
Following the second accident, police registered a case against the car driver. He has been identified as Bhagat Singh, 41, a resident of Sector 41. Authorities arrested him, but he was later released on bail.
These back-to-back fatal accidents have once again highlighted pressing concerns about road safety in the city. The Chandigarh Police are investigating both cases to determine the exact circumstances and any potential lapses that led to the tragedies.
The deaths of a young student with his future ahead and a senior citizen have left two families in mourning, raising urgent questions about driver responsibility and adherence to traffic rules on Chandigarh's roads.
