Tragic Accident on Pune-Mumbai Highway Claims Two Young Lives During Shiv Jayanti Pilgrimage
In a devastating incident early Friday morning, two youngsters lost their lives after a car jumped the median and collided with their motorcycle on the Pune-Mumbai highway. The accident occurred at Naigaon near Kamshet, approximately 45 kilometers from Pune city, casting a shadow over the festive occasion of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Jayanti.
Victims Identified as Omkar Arde and Darshan Shinde
The deceased have been identified as Omkar Arde, aged 22, and Darshan Shinde, aged 15, both residents of Vadeshwar village in Maval taluka. According to police reports, the duo was part of a larger group of youths traveling to Visapur fort in Maval taluka to bring back the sacred 'Shiv Jyot' flame as part of the Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Jayanti celebrations.
Details of the Fatal Collision
An officer from the Kamshet police station provided a detailed account of the tragic event. "The group from Vadeshwar and neighboring villages was journeying to Visapur fort on ten motorcycles, accompanied by a pickup truck," the officer stated. "Around 1 am on Friday, when they reached Naigaon on the Pune-Mumbai highway, a hatchback car traveling towards Pune suddenly jumped the median. It first struck a car in the opposite lane before crashing into the motorcycle ridden by Arde and Shinde."
The impact of the collision resulted in severe injuries to both young men. Their friends immediately rushed them to a nearby hospital, where medical professionals declared them dead upon arrival. The injured occupants of the hatchback car, identified as Ajay Devkar, 35, and Amar Padwal, 32, from Vehergaon in Maval taluka, were also taken to the same hospital and are currently undergoing treatment at a private facility near Talegaon Dabhade. Fortunately, no one in the other car involved in the initial impact sustained injuries.
Police Investigation and Legal Action
Preliminary investigations by the Kamshet police indicate that the hatchback car driver lost control due to excessive speed, leading to the vehicle jumping the median. "Prima facie, our findings suggest high speed as the cause of the driver losing control," the officer explained. "We have registered a case of causing death due to negligence under relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code. Our investigations are ongoing to gather more evidence and determine any additional factors contributing to this tragic incident."
Community in Mourning Over Festival Tragedy
This accident has left the local community in deep mourning, as it occurred during a significant religious and cultural event. Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Jayanti is widely celebrated in Maharashtra, with many devotees undertaking pilgrimages to honor the legendary Maratha warrior king. The loss of these two young lives has underscored urgent concerns about road safety on busy highways, especially during festive periods when traffic volumes increase.
Authorities are urging drivers to exercise caution and adhere to speed limits to prevent such tragedies in the future. The incident serves as a stark reminder of the consequences of negligent driving and the importance of vigilance on the roads.
