Tragic Late-Night Collision Claims Two Lives Near Kolkata's Joka Metro Station

A devastating road accident occurred late on Sunday night, resulting in the deaths of two individuals near the Joka Metro Station gate in Kolkata. The incident, which took place around 11:10 pm, has highlighted ongoing safety concerns in the area, as this marks the third fatal motorcycle crash in the Joka-Thakurpukur zone within just two weeks.

Details of the Fatal Incident

The victims have been identified as Anjan Sadukhan, aged 30, and Priya Das, aged 35. They were traveling on a motorcycle from Joka towards Thakurpukur when the crash occurred on the Behala-bound flank of the road, approximately 150 meters from the ESI Hospital.

Anjan Sadukhan, the rider and a resident of Bakrahat Road in Thakurpukur, was heading home from Joka. Priya Das, who was riding pillion, resided in the Haridevpur area. Both sustained grievous injuries in the collision and were rushed to Vidyasagar State General Hospital, where they were declared dead upon arrival.

Police Investigation and Possible Causes

According to authorities from the Fatal Squad of Traffic Police, investigators are working to determine the exact sequence of events. They are examining whether the motorcycle lost control and skidded on its own or if it was struck from behind by another vehicle.

An officer involved in the investigation stated, "We did not find any CCTV footage but believe that, given the high volume of truck traffic, there is a possibility that a truck was involved. Since the accident took place on the leftmost lane of the Behala-bound flank, the fact that a car tried to overtake from the left and hit the bike cannot be ruled out. Also, we cannot rule out the fact that the biker skidded and then got hit by a vehicle coming from behind."

The case has been registered at Thakurpukur Police Station under sections 281/106(1)/324(4) of the BNS and transferred to the Fatal Squad of Traffic Police at Lalbazar for further investigation.

Pattern of Accidents in the Area

This tragic event is part of a disturbing trend. Police confirmed that this is the third fatal accident in the Joka-Thakurpukur zone over the past two weeks, resulting in a total of five fatalities. All three incidents involved motorcycles.

  • In previous cases, two ESI doctors died near Silpara on James Long Sarani.
  • A pillion rider lost their life near the ESI gate while negotiating a U-turn.

Official Response and Safety Measures

Deputy Commissioner Rahul De of Behala-Southwest confirmed that local police have taken charge of the matter. Additionally, Commissioner of Police Supratim Sarkar addressed the broader issue of road safety in the area.

Sarkar stated, "Our senior officers have looked into the situation. Measures will be taken to prevent such incidents in the future." He emphasized that long-term measures are being implemented to curb accidents and enhance safety on Kolkata's roads.

The community and authorities are now grappling with the urgent need for improved traffic management and safety protocols to prevent further loss of life in this accident-prone corridor.
