The festive atmosphere of New Year's Eve in Ahmedabad was tragically marred by two separate hit-and-run incidents on Tuesday night, resulting in the deaths of two individuals. The fatal accidents occurred despite heightened police presence across the city for the celebrations.
Pedestrian Struck on Iskcon Flyover
In the first incident, which took place around 9:30 PM on Tuesday, a speeding vehicle fatally knocked down a 50-year-old pedestrian on the Iskcon flyover on SG Road. The victim has been identified as Vikram Parmar, a mason originally from Dahod.
Police reports indicate that Parmar was walking from Pakwan Crossroads towards Sarkhej and was in the process of crossing the flyover when he was hit. The impact was so severe that he succumbed to his injuries before any medical assistance could arrive at the scene.
Based on a complaint filed by Parmar's brother, the police have registered a case against an unidentified driver. Authorities are now meticulously examining CCTV footage obtained from the bridge and surrounding areas to identify the vehicle involved and trace the driver, who fled after the accident.
Second Fatal Crash in Vastral
In a concurrent and equally tragic event, a second hit-and-run was reported from the Vastral area of the city. Shravan Chaudhary, 44, died on the spot after being struck by an unknown vehicle near the RAF camp.
Similar to the first case, the police have filed a case against the unidentified motorist responsible for Chaudhary's death. Investigators are also sifting through available video recordings from the vicinity in a bid to identify the vehicle and apprehend the absconding driver.
Driving Negligence Under Scrutiny
These back-to-back fatalities have starkly highlighted the issue of driving negligence on Ahmedabad's roads, even during periods of increased police vigilance. The heavy police bandobast deployed for New Year's Eve festivities could not prevent these tragic losses of life.
The incidents have raised serious concerns about road safety and driver accountability. As the investigation continues, the focus remains on using technological evidence like CCTV to deliver justice for the families of Vikram Parmar and Shravan Chaudhary.
