Two Fatalities in Bhubaneswar Rooftop Bomb-Making Explosion; NIA Investigates
A suspected bomb-making operation on a rooftop in Bhubaneswar's Airfield area culminated in a devastating explosion, resulting in two deaths and multiple critical injuries. The incident, which occurred on January 27, has sparked a thorough investigation by authorities, including the National Investigation Agency (NIA).
Victims and Injuries from the Blast
Sehnawaz Malik, a 26-year-old individual with a criminal history, succumbed to severe burn injuries on February 4 after being critically wounded in the explosion. His mother, Lizatun Bibi, aged 51, also died from her injuries on February 10 at SCB Medical College and Hospital in Cuttack. Malik's fiancée, Truptimayee Mahal (23), and an associate, Amiya Mallick (27), remain under treatment at a private hospital in Bhubaneswar, having sustained grievous injuries in the blast.
Police Investigation and Criminal Background
Police officials from the Airfield station confirmed that Malik had suffered serious burn injuries, leading to his death. Investigators suspect the explosion happened while crude bombs were being assembled on the rooftop of Malik's rented residence. Malik had a prior criminal record, with seven cases including attempted murder and offences under the Arms Act. He had been released on bail approximately six months earlier following a political clash in Nayapalli and was under police surveillance at the time of the incident.
NIA Involvement and Forensic Findings
The intensity of the blast prompted a preliminary inquiry by the National Investigation Agency. Although the NIA later ruled out any connections to terrorism or radicalisation, officials are examining whether the case involves a larger conspiracy. Forensic sources have indicated that highly explosive materials, possibly including hexahydro trinitro triazine—a compound associated with high explosives—may have been used. Further analysis is currently underway to confirm these preliminary findings.
Emergency Response and Community Impact
Immediately after the explosion, bomb disposal squads, fire personnel, and forensic teams rushed to the scene. They collected remnants and seized raw materials suspected to have been used in the bomb-making process. Residents of the three-storey building, who were tenants, expressed shock and fear, stating they were unaware of any illegal activities occurring on the rooftop. One tenant remarked, "We had no idea. Everyone's lives were endangered."
Ongoing Probes and Security Measures
Police are continuing their investigation to determine if Malik acted alone or had accomplices, and whether the bombs were intended for criminal or political violence. In response to the incident, authorities have increased vigilance in sensitive areas of Bhubaneswar to prevent similar occurrences. Additionally, a video purportedly showing the moments of the blast has surfaced, depicting flames and chaos on the rooftop. Police are verifying this footage as part of their ongoing investigation.
