Two Arrested in Kottiyam for Assaulting Medical Staff at Holy Cross Hospital
In a disturbing incident at Holy Cross Hospital, Kottiyam police have taken swift action by arresting two individuals on Wednesday for allegedly assaulting a doctor and security personnel within the emergency department. The arrested persons have been identified as Ubaid, aged 34, and Hashi, aged 37, both residents of Nedumpana. This arrest follows a violent altercation that erupted over perceived delays in medical treatment, highlighting ongoing tensions in healthcare settings.
Details of the Assault Incident at Holy Cross Hospital
According to police reports, the incident stemmed from a road accident involving Abdul Razak, a native of Kulappadam. On Tuesday evening, Razak sustained injuries after his motorcycle collided with a car at Kannanallur and was subsequently brought to Holy Cross Hospital by local residents for emergency care. Shortly after his arrival, the injured youth's father and a group of friends reached the hospital premises, leading to a heated confrontation with the attending doctor.
The argument escalated quickly as the group accused the doctor of unnecessarily delaying Razak's treatment, despite the medical team's efforts to provide timely care. In a fit of rage, they allegedly physically assaulted the doctor, causing a chaotic scene in the emergency ward. When hospital security staff intervened to de-escalate the situation and protect the medical personnel, the aggressive gang turned their violence towards them, resulting in further injuries and disruption.
Police Investigation and Ongoing Efforts to Apprehend Remaining Suspects
Kottiyam police have confirmed that Ubaid and Hashi were apprehended in connection with this assault, but the investigation is far from over. Authorities are actively pursuing other individuals involved in the attack, including the father of the injured youth, who remains at large. Police officials have emphasized that such acts of violence against healthcare workers are unacceptable and will be met with strict legal action to ensure justice and deter future incidents.
This case underscores the critical need for enhanced security measures in hospitals and public awareness about respecting medical professionals during emergencies. The assault not only jeopardized the safety of staff but also disrupted essential services in the emergency department, potentially affecting other patients in need of urgent care.
