Kochi Police Arrest 2 Teens for Robbery, Assault in Mattancherry
Two 19-year-olds arrested for robbery in Kochi

In a swift operation, the Kochi City Police apprehended two young men on Saturday for allegedly carrying out a violent robbery in the Panayappilly area near Mattancherry. The accused, both aged 19, are charged with waylaying a victim, assaulting him, and stealing his valuable iPhone.

Details of the Mattancherry Robbery Incident

The crime occurred in the early hours of Friday, precisely at 12:15 am. According to the police complaint, the accused, identified as Akash Sashi and Neeraj Biju, both residents of Edakochi, attacked a young man. They not only assaulted and threatened him but also stole his iPhone worth Rs 75,000. In addition to the phone, the duo took Rs 200 in cash and forcibly made the victim transfer another Rs 200 via GPay.

Police Investigation and Arrest

Following the victim's complaint at the Mattancherry police station, an investigative team was formed. The team, operating under the supervision of Mattancherry assistant commissioner Umesh Goyal and led by inspector Shibin K A, tracked down the suspects. They were successfully arrested from near Fort Kochi Beach. The police recovered the stolen mobile phone from their possession.

The investigation also revealed that the accused have a history with law enforcement. Akash and Neeraj already have cases registered against them for alleged involvement in narcotics at the Palluruthy and Thoppumpady police stations.

Legal Proceedings and Judicial Custody

After their arrest, the two teenagers were presented before a court. The court has ordered them to be remanded to judicial custody for 14 days. The police team that conducted the investigation included SI Rajeev and CPOs Babylal, Ajith, and Sinosh.

This incident highlights concerns regarding street crime involving youth in the city and underscores the prompt response of the Kochi police in solving the case and recovering stolen property.
