Tragic Accident on Unnao Highway Claims Lives of Family of Four
A horrific road accident on the National Highway in Unnao's Sohramau police station area late Wednesday night resulted in the tragic deaths of a couple and their two young children. The family was returning home on a motorcycle when a speeding truck, whose driver was fleeing after colliding with a container, lost control and crushed their bike, killing all four on the spot.
Details of the Fatal Collision
The incident occurred approximately 40 kilometres from the Unnao district headquarters. According to police reports, Virendra (35), a resident of Ajgain Kotwali, had traveled with his family to attend a wedding function in Dayalpur Beti Banthra village under the Banthra police station area in Lucknow. After the event concluded, he was returning home at night on his motorcycle with his wife Ritu (33), daughter Anuradha (9), and son Rudra (6).
Their elder daughter Naina (14) was traveling separately on another bike with her brother-in-law Ranjit and survived the accident. Police stated that Virendra had stopped his bike near the Bhalla Farm intersection to wait for Ranjit, who was following behind. At that critical moment, a speeding truck struck a container moving ahead on the highway, causing the container to overturn.
Chaotic Aftermath and Police Response
In a desperate attempt to escape the scene, the truck driver lost control of the vehicle, which then veered and ran over the stationary family on the motorcycle. The impact was devastating, killing the couple and their two children instantly. The police reported that the bodies were severely damaged after being crushed under the truck's wheels, and the motorcycle was completely destroyed.
Officers collected scattered body parts from the highway and sent them for postmortem examination. Several chunks of debris were found stuck to the road divider, indicating the force of the collision. Police personnel worked to remove the bodies from the highway and restore normal traffic flow in the area.
Investigation and Legal Proceedings
Station Officer Arvind Pandey confirmed that all four bodies have been sent for postmortem examination. The truck driver, who initially fled the scene with the vehicle, was later apprehended and is currently in police custody. "We are in the process of registering an FIR. Further investigations are continuing to determine the exact circumstances and any potential negligence," Pandey stated.
The tragic incident has left the family devastated, with only three daughters now remaining. The community is in shock, and the case highlights ongoing concerns about road safety on national highways, particularly involving heavy vehicles. Authorities are urging drivers to adhere to speed limits and exercise caution, especially at night when visibility may be reduced.
