Truck Crash on Marthandam Bridge Kills Pillion Rider, Injures Three
A tragic multi-vehicle collision unfolded on the Marthandam bridge in Kanyakumari early Monday morning. The accident claimed the life of a young pillion rider and left three other individuals with serious injuries.
Chain Reaction Crash on Busy Bridge
Police reports indicate a container truck with Andhra Pradesh registration triggered the devastating chain of events. The truck was traveling from Nagercoil to Thiruvananthapuram, carrying a load of fish.
Around midnight, as the truck approached the Marthandam bridge, the driver suddenly lost control. The massive vehicle slammed into the rear of a mini truck ahead of it. This smaller truck was transporting chickens in steel cages.
The initial impact set off a series of collisions. Two cars and two tipper trucks traveling on the same route sustained significant damage in the ensuing chaos.
Rescue Operations and Casualties
Emergency services responded swiftly to the scene. Police officers and personnel from the Kuzhithurai fire service rushed to the accident site and immediately began rescue operations.
The falling steel cages from the mini truck proved particularly deadly. These cages crashed onto a two-wheeler, killing the 45-year-old pillion rider, Ramesh. The motorcycle rider suffered serious injuries in the same incident.
Three additional people sustained grave injuries, including the driver of the mini truck. All injured persons received emergency medical attention and were admitted to the Government Hospital for further treatment.
Investigation and Traffic Disruption
Marthandam police have registered a formal case regarding the accident. Authorities arrested the container truck driver, identified as 53-year-old Nagaraj from Andhra Pradesh. Police are conducting a thorough inquiry to determine the exact cause of the crash.
The collision caused major traffic disruptions along the affected road stretch. Vehicle movement remained hampered for approximately one and a half hours following the accident.
Fire and rescue services personnel worked diligently to clear the wreckage. They used a crane to remove the damaged vehicles from the bridge, restoring normal traffic flow.
