A major accident caused by a speeding cement truck sent shockwaves through Dehradun on Friday morning. The vehicle, laden with cement bags, plowed into at least five other cars and vehicles before finally crashing into roadside shops near the busy Mohabbewala Square.
Sequence of Events at Mohabbewala Square
The incident occurred around 8:30 am when traffic was already congested. According to Dehradun Police, the truck was arriving from the Asharodi side. At the square, another truck was attempting to manoeuvre into the opposite lane, creating a traffic jam. It was at this moment that the cement truck, allegedly suffering from a complete brake failure, crashed into the stationary vehicles.
Injuries and Immediate Aftermath
Miraculously, no fatalities were reported from the chaotic scene. Dehradun SSP Ajai Singh confirmed that the truck driver and his helper sustained only minor injuries in the crash. Both were promptly rushed to a nearby hospital for medical treatment and are reported to be in stable condition. The material damage, however, was significant, with multiple cars and the frontages of several shops suffering severe impact.
Police Investigation Underway
Authorities have initiated a thorough probe into the cause of the accident. SSP Ajai Singh stated that the initial investigation strongly points towards a technical failure in the truck's braking system. "A preliminary probe suggests that the truck suffered a brake failure. An investigation is underway," he said. The police are examining the vehicle's mechanical condition and will likely question the driver in detail once he is discharged from medical care.
The incident has once again highlighted concerns over vehicle maintenance and road safety on Dehradun's increasingly congested streets, especially during peak morning hours.
