Tribal 'Hero of Hill Kaka' Dies at 62

JAMMU: A tribal nomad from Murrah Hill Kaka, who joined anti-insurgency operations in the then terrorism-infested Poonch district in Jammu and Kashmir after quitting a job in Saudi Arabia to avenge his brother's killing, has died of a heart attack at the age of 62. Tahir Fazal, known in his area as the 'Hero of Hill Kaka', passed away on April 22 in Uttarakhand.

From Saudi Arabia to Anti-Insurgency

Tahir Fazal was widely respected for mobilizing the tribal community against Pakistan-trained terrorists to reclaim his native Hill Kaka, which had become a stronghold of militants. Fazal, along with his other brother, returned from Saudi Arabia on June 26, 2002, after their brother was killed by terrorists. After receiving arms training, Fazal joined the anti-insurgency operations and avenged his brother's death by eliminating militant Abu Kasiv. Soon, he became a veteran of many successful operations.

A Plea to the Home Minister

In 2019, Fazal wrote to the then Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh, requesting an opportunity for his community to deal with terrorists in Shopian and Anantnag. His appeal highlighted his continued commitment to fighting terrorism even years after his initial involvement.

Army's Tribute

Paying tribute to the veteran, the Army's White Knight Corps posted on X: 'A Brave Heart laid to Rest — With deep sorrow and immense gratitude, #IndianArmy bid a solemn farewell to Tahis Fazal, a valiant son of the soil who stood shoulder to shoulder with his own troops during Op Sarpvinash in 2003.' The operation referenced was a major anti-insurgency campaign in the region.

Meanwhile, Jammu and Kashmir minister Javed Ahmed Rana condoled Fazal's death, describing him as an 'unsung warrior' who contributed significantly to restoring peace in the area. Fazal's legacy as a tribal hero who fought against terrorism will be remembered by the community and the security forces alike.
