Transgender Community Issues Ultimatum Over Controversial Bill
Members of the transgender community have issued a stern warning of a nationwide protest if the proposed Transgender Bill is not immediately withdrawn. A major demonstration is scheduled to take place at Jantar Mantar in New Delhi on April 6, marking a significant escalation in their opposition to the legislation.
National Convention in Hisar Sets Stage for Action
Speaking at the national convention of the Kinnar Samaj in Hisar on Wednesday, prominent community leader Chandni Kinnar declared that if their demands are not met, they will pursue legal recourse through the Supreme Court. Additionally, they are prepared to launch a hunger strike at Ramlila Maidan to amplify their protest.
The convention, held at Agrasen Bhawan, witnessed robust participation from approximately 1,500 transgender representatives hailing from various regions across the country. Chandni Kinnar, a key figurehead of the community, was accompanied by fellow leaders Raj Haseena and Shobha Nehru during the media interaction that followed the event.
Criticism of Mandatory Medical Examination
Chandni Kinnar voiced strong criticism against a specific provision in the proposed legislation that mandates medical examinations for transgender individuals. She labeled this requirement as "insulting and discriminatory" and argued that it creates an unfair burden on the community.
"In a nation where citizens are not compelled to produce medical proof of identity, imposing such a condition exclusively on the transgender community is fundamentally unjust," she asserted during her address.
Appeal to Prime Minister and Broader Concerns
In a direct appeal to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Chandni urged for the withdrawal of the proposed bill. Her emotional plea emphasized the need for dignity and respect for the transgender community, stressing that their identity should not be subjected to medical validation.
Community leaders present at the convention described the bill as a severe threat to their existence, contending that it would disrupt long-established social structures and traditions. They maintained that the transgender community has historically regulated its own social systems and identity without external interference.
Peaceful Protest and Calls for Recognition
Responding to questions from journalists, Chandni clarified that the community is not issuing threats but making a peaceful appeal for the repeal of the bill. She highlighted that the transgender community seeks proper recognition, respect, and protection of its identity in acknowledgment of its contributions to society.
The planned protest at Jantar Mantar and potential hunger strike at Ramlila Maidan underscore the community's determination to advocate for their rights through non-violent means, while keeping legal options open through the Supreme Court.
