A tragic accident occurred near Vaniyambadi in Tirupattur district on Friday evening when a 17-year-old girl driving her father's car lost control and struck a motorcycle, resulting in the death of a 14-year-old pillion rider.
Details of the Incident
The minor girl, who was behind the wheel, mistakenly stepped on the accelerator instead of the brake, causing the vehicle to ram into the motorcycle. The bike was carrying a man and his daughter. The 14-year-old girl was thrown off and suffered severe injuries, while her father sustained minor injuries. Bystanders rushed them to Vaniyambadi Government Hospital, where the girl succumbed to her injuries despite immediate medical attention.
Police Action
Tirupattur Superintendent of Police Shyamala Devi confirmed that both the minor girl and her father were booked under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and the Motor Vehicles (MV) Act. The girl was produced before the Juvenile Justice Board (JJB), which sent her to an observation home. Her father was arrested and produced before a magistrate, who remanded him in judicial custody.
According to the police, the car was driven by the minor with her father's permission. The Ambalur police investigated and found that the girl had no driving experience and her error led to the fatal crash.
Legal Implications
Under the MV Act, vehicle owners face severe penalties, including imprisonment and cancellation of vehicle registration, if a minor causes a fatal accident. This case underscores the importance of preventing underage driving and ensuring parental responsibility.
