Jamshedpur Police Nab Thieves Who Used Google Maps to Target Homes
Thieves Used Google Maps to Target Houses, Arrested

In a startling case of technology-facilitated crime, police in Jamshedpur have cracked down on a gang of thieves who were using Google Maps to identify and target houses for burglaries. The arrests shed light on a modern criminal technique that spanned multiple states.

Digital Tools for Criminal Selection

According to East Singhbhum Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Piyush Pandey, the gang operated by using the popular mapping service, Google Maps, to randomly select their targets. This method allowed them to operate across a wide geographical area with a degree of planning previously associated with more sophisticated operations.

The gang's modus operandi involved moving between cities in three adjoining states – Jharkhand, West Bengal, and Bihar. They would use the digital maps to pick houses, carry out the break-in, and then flee the town immediately to evade capture. This pattern had led to a series of burglaries in recent months.

The Break in the Case

The gang's luck finally ran out following an incident in Jamshedpur's Golmuri area. On September 19 this year, the thieves allegedly broke into a house belonging to Rishabh Kumar. After Kumar filed a formal complaint at the Golmuri police station, a dedicated investigation team was formed to track down the culprits.

The police team left no stone unturned, employing a multi-pronged approach to solve the case. By meticulously analyzing CCTV footage, leveraging technical surveillance support, and acting on specific intelligence inputs, the team successfully identified and apprehended the suspects. The investigation revealed that all arrested individuals were residents of Patna, Bihar.

Arrests and Recoveries

The police have identified the three accused as Vikas Kumar (27), Raju Kumar (49), and Mohammad Irfan (26). All hail from different police station limits within Bihar. SSP Pandey indicated that further investigation is ongoing to uncover any local accomplices the gang might have had in Jamshedpur.

The arrests led to significant recoveries, including:

  • A firearm
  • Two 8 mm live cartridges
  • Stolen gold ornaments
  • Various instruments used specifically for breaking into homes

The accused were presented before a court and remanded to judicial custody on Saturday, marking a successful conclusion to the police's pursuit.

This case highlights a dual narrative of modern crime-fighting. It underscores how criminals are adapting everyday technology like mapping apps for illicit activities, while also demonstrating how law enforcement agencies are countering them with their own blend of technical expertise and traditional investigative methods. The Jamshedpur police's effective use of CCTV and digital forensics proved crucial in cracking this inter-state burglary ring.
