Thane Police's Major Drug Bust Uncovers Inter-State Syndicate
In a significant crackdown on narcotics trafficking, the Thane City Police Anti-Narcotics Cell (ANC) has successfully apprehended two individuals and confiscated a substantial quantity of heroin. The seized contraband weighed 1 kilogram and 736 grams, with an estimated street value of approximately Rs 6.9 crore, according to official statements.
Sting Operation Near Diva School
The operation was initiated following a high-level directive to intensify efforts against drug networks. Acting on confidential intelligence regarding a planned drug exchange, the Thane Crime Branch deployed a special team. In the early hours of February 3, 2026, they set up a trap near Humanity Public School in the Diva area.
During the operation, one accused, identified as Wajahat Sayeed (47), was caught red-handed at the location with the heroin. Subsequent investigations led to the arrest of his associate, Mohammad Mahadik, further unraveling the network.
Legal Action and Syndicate Exposure
A formal case has been registered under Sections 8(c), 21(c), and 29 of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act at the Shil-Daighar Police Station. Police officials emphasized that this seizure has brought to light an extensive inter-state drug smuggling syndicate. Authorities are now actively working to trace both the backward and forward linkages of this illicit operation.
Notorious Gangster's Return to Spotlight
The investigation took a dramatic turn with the revelation of Mohammad Mahadik's involvement. Police described him as a notorious gangster and the prime accused in this case. Mahadik had fled India soon after the 1993 Bombay blasts, spending nearly 22 years underground. He reportedly worked in Muscat, Oman, before returning to the country using a fake identity.
His criminal history is extensive, dating back to the 1990s, and includes cases related to:
- Fake passports
- Murder
- Attempt to murder
- Kidnapping
- Extortion
Thane police stated that Mahadik had established connections with various gangs during that era, including associations with figures like Dawood Ibrahim. He was previously arrested by the Unit-1 Crime Branch for possessing a fake passport. In the current case, investigators have identified him as the main supplier of the heroin seized by the ANC Thane unit.
Ongoing Probe and Public Appeal
Senior police officials have confirmed that the investigation is ongoing, with efforts focused on identifying other members of the syndicate and uncovering possible inter-state and international links. The Thane police have also made a public appeal, urging citizens to come forward with any information related to drug trafficking activities to aid in further crackdowns.
This operation not only marks a substantial victory in the fight against narcotics but also highlights the persistent efforts of law enforcement to bring long-fugitive criminals to justice, reinforcing the commitment to maintaining public safety and order.
