Thane Lok Adalat Awards Rs 2.1 Crore Compensation in Software Engineer Death Case

A Lok Adalat in Thane on Saturday delivered a significant verdict by settling a motor accident claim and awarding a compensation of Rs 2.1 crore to the family of a software engineer who tragically lost his life in a road accident on the Mumbai–Pune Expressway. This landmark decision highlights the court's role in providing justice and financial relief to victims' families.

Details of the Fatal Accident and Settlement

The victim, Omkar Joshi, was a software engineer employed with a private automation company. He was traveling with a colleague when a speeding car rammed into their vehicle, resulting in his untimely death. The matter was resolved through mediation, with the insurance company agreeing to pay the compensation to Joshi's legal heirs, ensuring swift justice without prolonged litigation.

Second Major Compensation Awarded

In a related case, the Lok Adalat also settled another accident claim, awarding Rs 1 crore to the family of Anand Rajan Nadar, an assistant security manager who was killed in a road accident in 2024. Nadar was on his motorcycle, traveling from his residence in Thane city to his workplace at Padgha in the Bhiwandi area, when a speeding tempo exiting a petrol pump crashed into him. He was rushed to a hospital in Bhiwandi but was declared dead upon arrival.

Wide-Ranging Settlements Across Multiple Cases

These two cases were part of a larger effort by the Lok Adalat, which settled a total of 83,424 cases on Saturday, facilitating collective settlements worth Rs 187 crore. To handle this massive workload, around 101 benches were constituted across the district, taking up over 5 lakh matters. Of these, 54,591 pre-litigation matters and 28,833 pending cases were successfully disposed of.

Breakdown of Disputes Resolved

The disputes resolved covered a variety of issues, with electricity bill disputes accounting for the highest number at over 2.6 lakh cases. Additionally, 3,966 bank recovery matters saw collective settlements worth more than Rs 62 crore. The Motor Accident Claims Tribunal (MACT) alone accounted for over Rs 35 crore in settlements, underscoring its critical role in addressing road accident claims.

A statement issued by the Thane District Legal Services Authority (TDLSA) highlighted these achievements, emphasizing the efficiency and effectiveness of the Lok Adalat system in resolving disputes amicably and expediently. This event demonstrates the judiciary's commitment to reducing case backlogs and providing timely justice to citizens.
