Teenager Detained for Gold Store Robbery in Bhubaneswar Over Online Gaming Debt
In a startling incident in Bhubaneswar, Tamando police have detained a 17-year-old boy in connection with the robbery of gold ornaments from a jewellery store in the Kalinga Vihar area. The arrest occurred on Wednesday, following the robbery that took place on Tuesday. Authorities have cited the juvenile's significant debt burden as the primary motive behind the crime.
Debt from Online Gaming Platform Sparks Criminal Plan
Deputy Commissioner of Police Jagmohan Meena revealed that the teenager had borrowed Rs 1 lakh from a man several months ago to invest in an online gaming platform. Unable to repay the loan, the boy devised a plan to rob a jewellery store to clear his financial obligations. This case highlights the dangerous consequences of unregulated online gaming and financial mismanagement among youth.
Detailed Account of the Robbery
The robbery unfolded around 1 pm when the boy, wearing a surgical mask, entered a jewellery shop as the sole customer. He pretended to be shopping for ornaments for his sister's wedding, prompting the salesman to display two chains and five rings. After engaging in bargaining to appear genuine, the boy suddenly sprayed pepper into the salesman's eyes and fled with the valuable items. Police investigations confirmed that he had purchased the pepper spray bottle from an online platform just hours before executing the robbery.
Post-Robbery Actions and Arrests
Following the theft, the juvenile met with two men, including the lender, and took them to a gold finance company near Fire Station Chowk. He falsely claimed the ornaments were family-owned and successfully pledged them, receiving Rs 2.2 lakh in cash. Police have also detained the gold loan company's manager, Prasant Kumar Mishra, for accepting the stolen gold without verifying its source or requesting purchase bills. While the stolen jewellery has been recovered and returned to the store owner, the cash obtained from the gold loan remains unrecovered.
Police Warnings and Investigation Insights
DCP Meena emphasized the need for gold loan companies to collaborate with law enforcement by sharing data on suspicious customers and conducting proper verification of pledged items. Investigators noted that the boy, who had no prior criminal history, had conducted reconnaissance of several jewellery shops in Bhubaneswar before selecting a small, less-crowded store as his target. This premeditation indicates a calculated approach to the crime.
Separate Chain-Snatching Case in Saheed Nagar
In an unrelated incident, police arrested 28-year-old Badal Nayak for allegedly snatching a woman's gold chain near Jaydev Vihar Chowk in Saheed Nagar on Tuesday evening. Locals apprehended Nayak after his bike skidded during his escape attempt, though his associate managed to flee. Authorities suspect Nayak and his accomplice may be involved in another chain-snatching case reported earlier that day, targeting a police officer's mother in Sailashree Vihar.
These cases underscore ongoing concerns about gold-related crimes in Bhubaneswar and the importance of community vigilance and corporate responsibility in preventing such incidents.
