Murshidabad Teacher Arrested for Firing Airgun at Playing Children, Injuring One
In a shocking incident in Murshidabad, a primary school teacher was arrested after he allegedly fired pellets from a suspected airgun at a group of children who were playing, resulting in injuries to one child. The event occurred on Friday in the Banipur area under the jurisdiction of the Raghunathganj police station.
Details of the Incident
Local sources have identified the arrested individual as Samir Kumar Mondal, a teacher at Omarpur Primary School. According to witnesses, approximately 10 to 12 children from the neighborhood regularly played in front of Mondal's house in Banipur. The ball used in their games often landed inside his property, which reportedly annoyed him. Mondal had previously warned the children to stop playing in that location.
On the day of the incident, the children were playing in a nearby field when the ball accidentally struck Mondal's door. Witnesses stated that Mondal lost his temper, retrieved an airgun, and fired four to five rounds in an attempt to scare the children away. As the children fled, one pellet struck a child's hand, causing injury.
Response and Aftermath
The injured child was immediately taken to Jangipur Subdivision Hospital in a bleeding condition and is currently undergoing treatment. The child's father, Biswajit Saha, expressed outrage, saying, "The children were playing, and the ball just hit his door. Does that justify shooting at children? My son was hit and is now in the hospital."
Upon receiving information about the shooting, police from the Raghunathganj police station swiftly arrived at the scene and arrested Mondal from his residence. During the arrest, authorities confiscated a gun, which they suspect may be a sophisticated airgun. Police indicated that forensic testing might be conducted to determine the exact type of weapon used.
Investigation and Legal Actions
During interrogation, Mondal admitted to his actions but claimed he did not intend to cause harm. He stated, "I fired only to scare them. I didn't realize it would hit someone." The incident has caused significant shock and concern among residents in the Banipur area.
Police have launched a thorough investigation into the matter and are taking appropriate legal action against the accused. The case highlights serious issues regarding public safety and the conduct of educators in the community.
This arrest underscores the importance of maintaining peace and security in residential areas, especially when it involves vulnerable groups like children. Authorities are urging the public to report any similar incidents to prevent such occurrences in the future.
