In a shocking incident of attempted cheating during a crucial police recruitment examination, the Surat police have booked a 22-year-old man for allegedly trying to use unfair means by taping a mobile phone under a bench inside the exam hall. The accused, identified as Shivam Yadav, a resident of Ankleshwar, was scheduled to take the police sub-inspector (PSI) recruitment written exam on Sunday morning but was apprehended before he could utilize the device.
Exam Day Discovery and Swift Police Action
The Gujarat government conducted the written examination for PSI recruitment across multiple centers on Sunday, with Surat serving as one of the designated locations. Madhuvan International School was selected as a venue for the test. According to police reports, Yadav arrived at the school exceptionally early, entering the premises at 6 am, well before the official police bandobust (security arrangement) was established.
Investigations reveal that Yadav allegedly used double-sided tape to securely attach a smartphone underneath a bench within the examination hall. His plan, however, was foiled just before the commencement of the exam when an examiner conducting a routine check of the room noticed the concealed device. Upon verification, it was confirmed that the seat above that particular bench had been allotted to Yadav.
Confession and Ongoing Investigation
Police officials were immediately informed, and Yadav was summoned for detailed questioning. During interrogation, he allegedly admitted to planting the phone earlier that morning. A police official stated, "He confessed that he planned to use ChatGPT and Google to search for answers using the mobile during the examination. We are currently probing who assisted him in gaining access to the exam hall so much ahead of time, as this raises serious security concerns."
Following the incident, Yadav was promptly debarred from taking the PSI recruitment exam. The police have registered a case against him under multiple legal provisions, including Sections 329(3) and 223 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, which pertain to trespassing and the use of unfair means. Additionally, charges have been filed under Sections 12(1) and 3 of the Gujarat Public Examination (Prevention of Unfair Means) Act, highlighting the severity of the offense in the context of public examinations.
