Surat Head Constable Assaulted by Four Persons While Managing Traffic Congestion
A 35-year-old head constable posted at the Surat Police Commissioner's office was allegedly assaulted by four individuals in the Nana Varachha area on Thursday night. The incident unfolded as the police officer, identified as Akshay Ahir, was returning home after completing his official duty.
Traffic Management Effort Turns Violent
According to detailed police reports, the confrontation occurred around 9:30 PM when Constable Ahir was passing near a health centre in Nana Varachha. He observed severe traffic congestion caused by multiple private buses obstructing the roadway. Demonstrating initiative and responsibility, Ahir stepped out of his personal vehicle to actively manage and clear the traffic jam.
During his traffic management efforts, Ahir noticed a car parked irresponsibly near one of the private buses, which was exacerbating the congestion problem. When he approached the driver and requested that the vehicle be moved to alleviate the traffic situation, the driver allegedly responded with threats and questioned the constable's authority to intervene.
Escalation to Physical Assault
Constable Ahir then presented his official identity card and clearly informed the individuals that he was performing his duty as a public servant. Despite this official identification, the situation rapidly deteriorated. The driver and his aide allegedly initiated a physical assault on the police officer.
Witnesses reported that one of the assailants wore a metal object on his hand and repeatedly punched Constable Ahir in the face with this reinforced weapon. The violence escalated further when two additional persons emerged from the nearby private bus and joined the assault against the lone police officer.
Medical Consequences and Police Response
As bystanders gathered at the scene, the four assailants fled the location. Constable Ahir was subsequently transported to PP Maniya Hospital for medical evaluation and treatment. Medical professionals confirmed that the officer sustained fractures near his nasal area, injuries consistent with being punched repeatedly with a hard object.
The Kapodra police station has registered a formal case against the four unidentified accused persons. The charges include:
- Obstructing a public servant from discharging official duty
- Voluntarily causing hurt using a dangerous weapon
Police authorities confirmed that despite 24 hours having passed since the incident, no arrests have been made as the accused individuals remain unidentified. Investigation teams are actively working to trace and apprehend the perpetrators through available evidence and witness statements.
This incident highlights the risks faced by law enforcement personnel even during routine public service activities and raises concerns about public cooperation with traffic management efforts in congested urban areas.
