Veterinary Student Nabbed for ₹23 Lakh Train Theft to Offset Betting Losses
In a startling incident at Nagpur railway station, a veterinary student has been apprehended for allegedly pilfering gold jewellery and cash amounting to approximately ₹23 lakh from a slumbering passenger aboard the Bikaner Express. The motive, as per police investigations, was to recoup substantial losses incurred through online betting activities.
Details of the Midnight Heist
The theft unfolded in the early hours of March 29, around 2:15 AM. The victim, Harishchand Chandwani (65), a resident of Raipur, was journeying with his family to Ujjain in coach A2. His wife had securely placed a purse containing valuable gold ornaments and ₹20,000 in cash beneath her head while resting on berth K03. Upon awakening, the family discovered the purse missing; it was later located empty in the coach's bathroom, sparking immediate alarm.
Meticulous Police Investigation Unfolds
The Government Railway Police (GRP) in Nagpur swiftly initiated a probe under the guidance of SP (Railways) Mangesh Shinde and other senior officials. Investigative teams meticulously scrutinized more than 200 CCTV footage feeds from the station and adjacent areas, successfully identifying a suspect exiting the premises. This breakthrough was bolstered by an analysis of Rapido bike bookings and correlated mobile data, which directed the authorities to Nanded.
On April 6, a specialized team was deployed to Nanded, and surveillance was intensified on vehicles traversing between Nanded and Nagpur. The following day, April 7, the accused, Rohit Duyyewar (23), was intercepted at Rahate Colony. After a brief pursuit near Friends Colony, he was taken into custody. When presented with irrefutable CCTV evidence, Duyyewar admitted to committing the crime.
Recovery and Underlying Motive
Law enforcement officials have successfully recovered gold ornaments valued at around ₹18 lakh, with ongoing efforts to trace the remaining stolen items. Duyyewar has been remanded to police custody for further questioning. Investigators revealed that Duyyewar, a veterinary student from Nanded who was studying in Nagpur, turned to theft as a desperate measure after suffering significant financial setbacks from online betting. The case was resolved through a combination of diligent fieldwork and advanced technical surveillance techniques.
