A tragic pre-dawn collision in South Delhi claimed two lives and left one injured after a speeding car rammed into a taxi near the Siri Fort area on Wednesday. The Delhi Police have arrested a 21-year-old MBA student in connection with the fatal incident.
Details of the Fatal Collision
The accident occurred at the traffic intersection of August Kranti Marg. According to police, Krishansh Kapoor, the accused, was driving a Citroën car when it collided head-on with a white Hyundai Xcent cab coming from the opposite direction. The impact was severe, causing the cab to veer off, hit a signboard, and then crash into a traffic signal pole before mounting the pavement.
The cab driver, Girja Kumar Bharadwaj (43), and one of his passengers, Ranjeet (30), succumbed to their injuries at the AIIMS Trauma Centre. A second passenger, Sumit (20), is currently undergoing treatment. The police control room received a distress call about the accident at 4:20 am.
Victims' Journey and Police Action
Investigations revealed that Bharadwaj, a resident of Khirchipur in East Delhi, was ferrying Ranjeet and Sumit—both relatives and wedding drummers—from Andrews Ganj to Ranjeet's house in Nehru Nagar. They had been performing at a wedding in South Delhi. As Bharadwaj's car turned towards Balbir Saxena Marg from the Siri Fort intersection, the speeding Citroën, coming down from the Panchsheel Flyover, smashed into its left side.
Krishansh Kapoor was arrested from the spot. The police stated he was returning from a friend's party and heading to his home in the Udai Park area of Andrews Ganj, roughly a kilometer from the crash site. A case has been registered against him under sections 281 and 106 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) at the Hauz Khas police station. A medical examination confirmed he was not under the influence of alcohol at the time.
Aftermath and Personal Tragedies
The scene at the Andrews Ganj intersection was one of devastation, with the left side of the taxi completely mangled and the Citroën's bumper damaged. The tragedy has left behind grieving families. Girja Kumar Bharadwaj is survived by his wife and two sons. In a cruel twist of fate, his younger son is reportedly in a coma following an accident two years ago, compounding the family's misery.
This incident has once again highlighted the dangers of speeding on Delhi's roads, especially during the early hours. The police investigation is ongoing to ascertain the exact speed and other circumstances that led to this fatal crash.
