The Special Investigation Team (SIT) in Chandigarh has concluded a critical phase of its probe into the tragic suicide of senior Haryana IPS officer Y Puran Kumar. The team has successfully recorded the statements of all 14 serving and retired IAS and IPS officers who were named in the officer's final note.
Key Details of the Investigation
The SIT has not made any arrests nor held anyone directly responsible for the death at this stage. The investigation is now pivoting towards a crucial piece of evidence: the pending report from the Forensic Science Laboratory (FSL). Officials closely associated with the case confirm that this report will be instrumental in deciding the future legal course of action.
The list of officers questioned is notable for its seniority. It includes Haryana's Chief Secretary Anurag Rastogi, Director General of Police (DGP) Shatrujeet Kapur, and former chief secretary TVSN Prasad. Other prominent names are former additional chief secretary Rajeev Arora, former DGP Manoj Yadav, and several ADGPs including Amitabh Dhillon, Sandeep Khirwar, Sanjay Kumar, and M Ravi Kiran. The roster also features Principal Secretary Kala Ramchandran, IG-rank officers Pankaj Nain and Kulwinder Singh, and SP Narendra Bijarnia.
Sequence of Events and Allegations
The case stems from a rapid and distressing sequence of events in October 2025. On October 6, 2025, an FIR was registered at the Urban Estate police station in Rohtak against the IPS officer's gunman, Sushil Kumar. The complaint, filed by Rohtak resident Praveen Bansal, alleged that Kumar demanded a bribe of Rs 2.5 lakh for providing security and issued threats. Bansal submitted audio-video recordings and documents to support his claim.
The very next day, on October 7, 2025, Sushil Kumar was arrested. On that same day, IPS officer Y Puran Kumar died by suicide, shooting himself at his residence in Chandigarh's Sector 11.
The final note left by Kumar, along with a subsequent complaint filed by his wife, IAS officer Amneet P Kumar, contains serious allegations. They claim that the FIR against the gunman was part of a larger conspiracy. Furthermore, they allege that planned pressure was systematically built on the deceased officer, which ultimately led to the extreme step.
Wider Probe and Next Steps
Beyond the 14 named officers, the SIT has cast a wide net in its investigation. The team has recorded statements from more than 70 witnesses connected to the case, indicating the probe's extensive scope.
Currently, the SIT is meticulously examining every facet of the incident. The primary objective is to definitively ascertain the circumstances and reasons that pushed the officer to take his own life. The FSL report is awaited as a vital corroborative piece of evidence. Once this report is received and analyzed, the SIT will compile its findings and submit a comprehensive report to the court, which will determine if any legal proceedings are to be initiated against the individuals named.
