Gunshots Echo at Panjab University Campus During Student Festival, Sparking Security Alarm

In a shocking incident that has raised serious security concerns, two shots were reportedly fired on the Panjab University (PU) campus in Chandigarh on Tuesday evening. The gunshots occurred near the Department of Botany, creating panic during the university's annual student festival, Jhankaar, which was under heavy security surveillance at the time.

Targeted Threat to Student Leader Amid Festival Chaos

According to preliminary investigations by the Chandigarh Police, the shots were fired into the air with the alleged intent to threaten Jashanpreet (Jashan) Singh Jawanda, a student leader affiliated with the Student Organisation of Panjab University (SOPU). Jawanda, who previously contested as a secretary candidate from SOPU in the Panjab University Students Council (PUCSC) elections, leads one of the factions within the student group. The incident hints at an old rivalry that has resurfaced, adding to the tension on campus.

Chandigarh SSP Kanwardeep Kaur stated, "The police have seized two shells from the spot. Preliminary investigation suggests the shots were fired to threaten an individual named Jashanpreet Singh Jawanda. However, no complainant has come forward so far. The matter is under investigation, and we're tracking CCTV footage across the campus."

Historical Context of Violence on Campus

This is not the first time violence has marred the Panjab University campus. In a past incident in April 2016, firing inside the campus left three individuals injured. That altercation, which occurred in the parking lot of PU's Department of Police Administration, resulted in arrests of two student leaders and a case registered against five persons. The recurrence of such events underscores ongoing challenges in maintaining peace and security within the university premises.

Jawanda's political involvement adds another layer to the incident. In 2024, he was publicly introduced as a candidate for the general secretary seat from SOPU by Ravi Rajgarh, an alleged associate of the Bishnoi group, during the PUCSC elections. This connection highlights the complex interplay of student politics and external influences that sometimes escalate into violent confrontations.

Heightened Security Measures and Ongoing Probe

Despite the presence of heavy security during the Jhankaar festival, the gunshots have exposed vulnerabilities in campus safety protocols. Authorities are now intensifying their efforts to identify the perpetrators and prevent further incidents. The investigation is focusing on:

  • Analyzing CCTV footage from across the campus to trace the suspects.
  • Interviewing witnesses and students to gather more details about the rivalry.
  • Reviewing security arrangements to ensure such breaches do not recur in the future.

The lack of a formal complaint so far has complicated the probe, but police remain committed to uncovering the truth and ensuring justice. This incident serves as a stark reminder of the need for robust conflict resolution mechanisms and enhanced vigilance in educational institutions to safeguard students and staff.
