Security forces have resumed their counter-terrorist operations in the dense forests of Kishtwar district in Jammu and Kashmir. This action follows a night-long pause due to darkness. The operations restarted on Monday morning in the upper reaches of the Chhatru area.
Encounter Leads to Injuries
During a significant encounter on Sunday afternoon, eight security personnel sustained injuries. Many of these injuries occurred when personnel slipped on treacherous forest tracks. The terrorists, who were positioned at higher elevations, used rifle grenades and AK-47 fire to target advancing search parties in the Singhpora area.
Local villagers played a crucial role in the aftermath. They helped bring the injured personnel down from the forests to the nearest road. From there, the personnel were evacuated to a hospital for treatment.
Intelligence and Terrorist Presence
The operation was initiated based on specific intelligence inputs. These inputs indicated the presence of terrorists in the region. Two groups are reportedly active in the area. One group is led by Saifullah, and the other by Adil. Both leaders are Pakistani nationals and have been active for nearly two years.
At least three terrorists from Jaish-e-Mohammad are believed to be hiding in the forests. In response, reinforcements have been rushed to the area. Senior officials from security forces and police have also arrived at the spot to oversee the operations.
Broader Security Context
Sources suggest that nearly 35 Pakistani terrorists might be hiding in the mountainous forests of Doda and Kishtwar districts. This area is part of the Chenab Valley region. The presence of these terrorists has prompted security forces to intensify counter-terror operations during the winter months.
Winter operations are strategic because heavy snowfall in higher reaches restricts terrorist movement. Additionally, security measures have been stepped up ahead of Republic Day across the Jammu region. This region has experienced multiple drone intrusions from across the International Border and the Line of Control.
Recent Operations and Movements
There have been reports of terrorist movement in several districts over the past few days. These districts include Kathua, Samba, Rajouri, and Poonch. In response, police and security forces have launched combing and search operations in these areas.
In the past week alone, security forces and police have successfully busted three terrorist hideouts. These hideouts were located in forests near the Billawar area of Kathua district. The ongoing efforts highlight a sustained push to curb terrorist activities in the region.
As of the latest reports, there has been no contact with the terrorists for the past 12 hours. Security forces maintained a cordon during the night to prevent any escape attempts. The situation remains dynamic with operations actively continuing.
