Second Fire Ignites in Delhi Building Days After Fatal Blaze

A second fire erupted on Wednesday night in the same building in southwest Delhi's Palam Village where a massive blaze just days earlier claimed the lives of nine members of a single family, gutting their home and shop. This new incident has ignited serious safety concerns in the densely populated area.

Police Suspect Residual Heat and Combustible Materials

Police officials investigating the flare-up suspect that residual heat trapped within the structure, combined with combustible materials left on the premises and aided by strong winds, likely sparked the nighttime fire. A senior police officer stated, "The residual heat in the building is likely to have caused the fire." Fortunately, emergency responders were able to quickly bring this second blaze under control.

The intensity of the initial, deadly fire had significantly delayed a thorough inspection and investigation into its cause, which began on Wednesday morning at the shop operated by Rajender Kashyap and his family.

Forensic Investigation Points to Possible Electrical Fault

On Thursday, a team from the Forensic Science Laboratory (FSL) arrived at the site to collect samples of burnt debris, with a particular focus on the ground floor, which is suspected to be the origin point of the first fire. Preliminary findings indicate a possible short circuit near a switchboard.

An FSL official explained, "The team has found indications of a short-circuit-like condition near a switchboard; however, the final report will provide clarity." The official added that the extreme heat retained in the structure made evidence collection challenging in the immediate aftermath.

Comprehensive Safety Probe Underway

Multiple investigative teams worked throughout Thursday to examine various factors, including:

  • The electrical load on meters
  • The condition of internal wiring
  • The overall building infrastructure to identify potential faults

Authorities are also analyzing CCTV footage and videos shared by local residents on social media platforms to piece together the timeline and precise origin of the initial, catastrophic blaze.

Rajender Kashyap, the shop owner, was brought to the site to assist investigators. An officer noted, "There were almirahs and other items that needed to be identified, so he helped us."

This second fire has raised alarm about potential ongoing hazards within the damaged structure, prompting authorities to remain on high alert to prevent any further flare-ups in the crowded neighborhood.
