Sabarimala Probe: SIT Seizes Gold Vajivahanam from Tanthri

Sabarimala Flag Mast Investigation Takes a Dramatic Turn

The Special Investigation Team (SIT) has made a significant breakthrough in its probe into the Sabarimala temple flag mast case. The team informed the Kerala High Court that a detailed inquiry into the 'ashtadikpalaka idols' attached to the flag mast has become unavoidable. This development follows the recovery of the 'vajivahanam' affixed to the old flag mast from the residence of tanthri Kandararu Rajeevaru.

Recovery of Gold-Plated Vajivahanam

During a search operation at the tanthri's residence, the SIT seized the vajivahanam. This sacred object is crafted from Panchaloha, a traditional five-metal alloy. It features a substantial layer of gold on its outer surface and weighs approximately 10.68 kilograms. The recovery of this valuable item has intensified the investigation.

Background of the Flag Mast Replacement

The probe revealed that in 2017, the Sabarimala temple installed a new flag post, known as kodimaram. This structure replaced the existing one at that time. The court had appointed an advocate commissioner to supervise the entire erection process. After the replacement, the vajivahanam from the old kodimaram was handed over to Rajeevaru. The then president and a member of the Travancore Devaswom Board facilitated this transfer.

Scope of the SIT Investigation

The SIT further informed the High Court that it is scrutinizing the circumstances surrounding the dismantling of the earlier kodimaram and the installation of the new one. Investigators are systematically examining and seizing connected files, administrative records, and related documents. Their goal is to trace the decision-making chain, establish accountability, and determine potential criminal liability.

High Court's Directives

Upon hearing the SIT's submissions, the Kerala High Court issued clear directives. The court instructed the SIT to investigate the matter with utmost diligence, professionalism, and rigour. It emphasized the need for a thorough, impartial, and comprehensive inquiry. The bench stressed that the investigation must leave no stone unturned in uncovering all facets of the alleged criminal acts.

The court's strong words underscore the seriousness of the allegations. This case involves not just procedural lapses but potential criminal misconduct at one of Kerala's most revered temples. The SIT now faces the challenging task of piecing together events from 2017 while ensuring justice prevails.
