RPF Seizes 4kg Ganja at Trichy Junction, Monthly Haul Hits 40kg
RPF seizes 4kg ganja at Trichy railway station

In a significant crackdown on drug smuggling via railways, personnel from the Railway Protection Force (RPF) intercepted 4 kilograms of ganja at Trichy Junction in the early hours of Saturday. The contraband, with an estimated street value of Rs 2 lakh, was found abandoned in a train coach.

Operation Narcos Yields Results

As part of Operation Narcos, a dedicated anti-narcotics drive, an RPF team conducted a special inspection at the busy Trichy railway station. The operation was timed with the arrival of the Howrah-Trichy superfast express on platform number 3. Shortly after the train arrived, RPF officials began a random check of passengers.

During the inspection, their attention was drawn to an unattended black bag stowed below a seat in a general compartment. Upon opening the bag, the team discovered the stash of ganja. With no one claiming the bag, officials seized the narcotics immediately.

Record Monthly Haul for Trichy Station

This single seizure has contributed to a staggering monthly total. In the month of October alone, the RPF has confiscated 40 kilograms of ganja at Trichy station. This figure marks the highest monthly seizure recorded at the station in the past two years, indicating both heightened smuggling activity and more vigilant surveillance.

The broader picture for the year is equally concerning. Since January, the RPF has recovered a total of 90.5 kilograms of ganja valued at approximately Rs 37 lakh from Trichy Junction. The consistent seizures point to the station being a potential transit route for drug peddlers.

Ongoing Investigation and Handover

Following standard procedure, the recovered 4 kilograms of ganja from Saturday's operation has been formally handed over to the Trichy city police for further investigation. The police are now tasked with tracing the origin of the contraband and identifying the individuals involved in the smuggling attempt.

The success of Operation Narcos underscores the RPF's continued focus on securing railway premises against the illegal drug trade. Authorities have urged passengers to remain vigilant and report any unattended luggage or suspicious activity to railway personnel immediately.
