Roorkee Convict Recaptured After Dramatic Court Escape
A 35-year-old convict who made a daring escape from police custody in Roorkee faced swift justice. Authorities arrested him late on Saturday night, ending a brief but intense manhunt.
Cheque Dishonour Leads to Conviction
Neeraj Goswami, a resident of Rahmatpur village near Kaliyar, received a one-year prison sentence from a Roorkee court on Friday. The court convicted him after a cheque worth Rs 2.5 lakh issued by him bounced due to insufficient funds.
Escape from Courtroom Sparks Action
Soon after the verdict, a police court clerk escorted Goswami out of the courtroom. The convict seized this moment to flee from custody, creating immediate chaos.
Senior Superintendent of Police Pramendra took prompt disciplinary measures. He suspended the concerned police court clerk and ordered the registration of a case against him. The charge falls under BNS Section 262, which addresses dereliction of duty by a public servant.
Intensive Police Operation
Police teams launched coordinated raids at multiple locations. They searched Goswami's residence and possible hideouts in his native village, following every lead.
The breakthrough came near the railway station. Police officials spotted Goswami as he attempted to flee the city. Officers moved quickly to apprehend him without further incident.
"We traced him near the railway station as he was trying to flee the city and arrested him," stated Dobal, confirming the successful operation.
The arrest closes a chapter of uncertainty, demonstrating police responsiveness to custody breaches. The incident highlights procedural vigilance in handling convicted individuals during court transitions.
