In a brazen afternoon robbery, a retired woman police officer was targeted by bike-borne assailants in Kanpur on Thursday. The incident, which saw a gold chain worth approximately Rs 1.5 lakh snatched, has sent shockwaves through the Awas Vikas Keshavpuram neighborhood in Rawatpur.
CCTV Captures Brazen Daylight Robbery
The entire chain-snatching episode was recorded by a closed-circuit television camera installed outside a neighbor's residence. The footage has become a crucial piece of evidence for the police teams now investigating the case. According to the official report, the victim, Manju Lata Dubey, a retired sub-inspector from the Crime Branch-Criminal Investigation Department (CBCID), was attacked when she stepped out to offer water at the nearby Gayatri Park.
Modus Operandi of the Accused
Dubey stated in her complaint that two youths on a motorcycle approached her. The rider was wearing a helmet, while the pillion rider had covered his face and mouth. The pillion rider initiated the robbery under the pretext of asking for directions. In a swift and violent move, he snatched the gold chain from her neck. When Dubey confronted him, he pushed her to the ground and even attempted to break her bangles before the duo sped away on their bike.
The victim's family has a strong connection to law enforcement; her husband currently serves as a Deputy Jailer in Mirzapur. The audacity of the crime, targeting a former police officer in a residential area, has heightened local concerns.
Police Response and Investigation
Law enforcement responded promptly to the distress call. DCP West and other personnel visited the crime scene, conducted a thorough inspection, and recorded the victim's statement. The crucial CCTV footage was seized for analysis. Acting on the evidence, police immediately set up checkpoints across several locations and were seen checking two-wheeler riders late into the evening.
ADCP West Kapil Dev Singh addressed the media, confirming the active pursuit of the culprits. "Two dedicated teams have been deployed to identify and apprehend the robbers. The Crime Branch is also actively working on this case. We assure the public that the miscreants will be arrested at the earliest," Singh stated. The intensive search operation underscores the seriousness with which the police are treating this high-profile snatching.
