Agra: A 73-year-old retired sub-inspector (SI) of Uttar Pradesh Police allegedly shot his wife dead before dying by suicide in Firozabad district on Sunday, police said.
The deceased were identified as Rakesh Kumar, who worked as the manager of Adarsh Krishna Inter College, and his wife, Rammoorti Devi, 68, who was undergoing treatment for cancer. Kumar was the son of former Congress MLA Jagdish Singh Yadav.
Police said Kumar allegedly used his licensed revolver to shoot his wife in the chest before shooting himself in the forehead at their home near Subash Chowk. The couple’s daughter and grandson rushed to the room after hearing gunshots.
Senior police officers and local police reached the spot and recovered the licensed revolver used in the incident. SP (Rural), Firozabad, Anuj Chaudhary told TOI, “We are investigating the matter from all angles. No suicide note has been recovered from the scene.”
According to relatives, Kumar had been under severe mental stress following allegations of financial irregularities linked to the inter college. In May 2025, a case was registered against him on court orders after his nephew accused him of misappropriating income from the institution’s agricultural land and fraudulently retaining control as its manager.
Family members told police that Kumar had returned from a court hearing on Saturday and appeared disturbed. His elder daughter said he had been under stress in recent months.
