Rajkot Minor Rape: Chargesheet Aims for Year-End, 3 FIRs Filed

In a significant development, the Rajkot Rural Police have announced their intention to file a chargesheet in the horrific case involving the sexual assault of a minor girl with an iron rod before the end of this year. This comes as the investigation into the brutal crime, which has seen three separate First Information Reports (FIRs) filed within a span of six days, enters a crucial phase.

A Timeline of the Crime and Swift Police Action

The incident dates back to December 4, when the accused, a 31-year-old farm labourer, allegedly found the child alone in a field. According to police statements, he took her behind a water tank and attempted to rape her. When he failed, he inserted a metal rod, causing severe internal injuries and trauma to the girl.

The police initiated a meticulous investigation, starting with a list of 100 suspects which was narrowed down to 10. The minor survivor identified the accused from photographs, leading to his arrest on December 9. An FIR was formally registered on December 8 after medical examination results confirmed the assault. A local court granted the police a five-day remand of the accused on December 10.

Three FIRs in One Case: Rape, Shootout, and Identity Breach

This complex case has led to the registration of three distinct FIRs at the same police station, highlighting its multiple dimensions.

The first FIR pertains to the heinous rape and assault on the minor under relevant sections of the law, including the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act.

The second FIR was registered on December 10 against the accused himself for an alleged attack on police personnel. During a crime scene reconstruction visit for evidence recovery, the accused allegedly picked up a scythe (dhaariyu) and attacked a head constable, injuring his hand and chest. In response, two policemen fired, shooting the accused in both legs. This FIR was filed for attempted murder.

The third FIR, registered on December 13, targets a local Congress party politician. She has been booked for allegedly disclosing the identity and residence of the minor survivor and her parents on social media. The charges against her include BNS section 72, sections of the POCSO Act, and the Juvenile Justice Act.

Chargesheet on Fast Track, Accused in Judicial Custody

Rajkot Rural Superintendent of Police, Vijay Singh Gurjar, confirmed that the accused, after receiving treatment for his gunshot wounds, has been sent to judicial custody. The injured head constable has been discharged from the hospital.

Police sources indicate that medical and forensic reports in this sensitive case have been fast-tracked. SP Gurjar stated that the investigation aims to file a comprehensive chargesheet within a fortnight, targeting completion by New Year's Eve or earlier. He emphasized the dual focus on speed and quality, ensuring no compromise in the investigative process.

The police's stated goal underscores the seriousness with which authorities are treating this case, amidst public outrage and strict legal provisions for crimes against minors.
