Rajkot Farmer Apprehended in Major Cannabis Cultivation Bust
In a significant crackdown on narcotics, a 40-year-old farmer was arrested in Rajkot district after police allegedly discovered cannabis plants valued at over Rs 37 lakh being cultivated on his agricultural property. The incident occurred in the Vinchhiya taluka, highlighting ongoing efforts by law enforcement to combat illegal drug activities in rural areas.
Tip-Off Leads to Farm Search and Seizure
The accused, identified as Ramesh Jadav, was apprehended near Bhadli village following a tip-off received by the Special Operations Group (SOG). According to police reports, the SOG team was patrolling the Jasdan–Vinchhiya area when they received credible information that Jadav had cultivated cannabis on his farmland. Acting swiftly on this intelligence, the team proceeded to the location and conducted a thorough search of the farm.
During the inspection, officers observed cannabis plants interspersed among other crops across the land. Jadav, who has been engaged in farming for the past 15 years, was subjected to preliminary questioning by the authorities. To confirm the nature of the plants, the SOG team summoned experts from the Forensic Science Laboratory (FSL) for verification.
Forensic Confirmation and Legal Action
The preliminary examination by the FSL team conclusively identified the plants as cannabis, leading to the seizure of more than 74 kg of cannabis plants from the farm. This substantial haul underscores the scale of the illegal cultivation operation. Police have registered a case against Jadav under the stringent provisions of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act, 1985, which carries severe penalties for such offenses.
This arrest is part of a broader initiative by Gujarat police to curb drug trafficking and cultivation in the region. The involvement of specialized units like the SOG and forensic teams demonstrates a coordinated approach to tackling narcotics-related crimes, ensuring that evidence is properly documented and legal proceedings are robust.
