Major Reshuffle in Punjab Police Leadership: Key Appointments Announced

The Punjab government has executed a significant reshuffle within the senior ranks of its police force, announcing key postings and transfers of Indian Police Service (IPS) officers on Monday. This strategic move aims to optimize leadership roles and ensure effective law enforcement across the state.

Sharad Satya Chauhan Appointed as Vigilance Bureau Chief

In a pivotal decision, the government has posted 1992-batch IPS officer Sharad Satya Chauhan as the special director general of police (DGP)-cum-chief director of the vigilance bureau. He replaces 1994-batch IPS officer Praveen Kumar Sinha, who previously held this critical position overseeing anti-corruption and vigilance operations.

Praveen Kumar Sinha Transitioned to Law and Order Role

Special DGP Praveen Kumar Sinha has been reassigned as officer on special duty (OSD) for law and order, effective immediately. He will serve in this capacity until April 30, after which he will officially take over as special DGP (law and order) from May 1. This transition follows the superannuation of the current special DGP for law and order, Arpit Shukla, on April 30, ensuring a smooth handover of responsibilities.

Additional Key Postings and Transfers

The reshuffle includes several other notable changes within the police hierarchy:

  • Gurmeet Singh Chauhan: The 2011-batch IPS officer has been removed from his position as deputy inspector general (DIG) of the anti-gangster task force (AGTF). According to the official order, his new posting will be "proposed subsequently," and his services have been placed at the disposal of the DGP of Punjab until further instructions are issued.
  • Arun Pal Singh: A 1997-batch IPS officer, previously serving as ADGP (jails), has been appointed as the managing director of the Punjab Police Housing Corporation, taking over from Gurmeet Singh Chauhan in this role.
  • R K Jaiswal: Another 1997-batch IPS officer, currently serving as ADGP (NRI), has been given the additional charge of ADGP (jails), filling the vacancy left by Arun Pal Singh.
  • Ram Singh: The 1994-batch IPS officer, who is serving as special DGP (technical support services), has been assigned the additional charge of special DGP-cum-commandant general of the Punjab Home Guards and director of civil defence, expanding his responsibilities within the force.

This comprehensive reshuffle reflects the Punjab government's ongoing efforts to streamline police administration and enhance operational efficiency. The changes are expected to bring fresh perspectives and renewed focus on key areas such as vigilance, law and order, and specialized task forces, ultimately contributing to improved public safety and governance in the state.
