In a major pre-emptive strike to ensure the smooth conduct of the upcoming civic polls, the Pune police have initiated stringent action against more than 5,500 individuals with criminal cases pending against them. The crackdown comes just ahead of the crucial Pune Municipal Corporation elections, which are scheduled for January 15.
Wide-Ranging Police Action Across Jurisdictions
Pune Police Commissioner, Amitesh Kumar, outlined the extensive measures taken by the force. The action targeted persons involved in a spectrum of illegal activities including body offences, bootlegging, gambling, gang activities, and the illegal use of firearms. The drive was not confined to Pune city alone but extended across the jurisdictions of the Pimpri Chinchwad and Pune rural police as well.
Commissioner Kumar explained that the individuals were dealt with through multiple legal avenues. "These persons were externed from Pune city, Pimpri Chinchwad and Pune rural police jurisdictions for various time periods. Some of them were sent to jail, notices were issued to many others and numerous such persons were booked under prohibitory orders," he stated.
Special Teams to Curb Electoral Malpractices
Understanding the potential for interference in the democratic process, the police have formed special squads. The primary objective of these teams is to prevent any incidents of direct or indirect pressure on voters and other electoral malpractices. The police have also appealed to the citizens to play an active role in safeguarding the integrity of the elections.
"Citizens should immediately inform the police if any wrongdoing was noticed," urged Commissioner Kumar, emphasizing the importance of public cooperation. He further assured that the police are maintaining a close vigil on candidates with criminal backgrounds to prevent any undue influence.
A Continuous Process for Fair Elections
The police have made it clear that this is not a one-time drive. Commissioner Amitesh Kumar warned that more such actions would be taken if necessary in the near future. The overarching goal is to create a secure environment where voters can exercise their franchise without fear or intimidation.
This decisive move by the Pune police underscores the administration's commitment to conducting free, fair, and peaceful municipal elections. By proactively restraining elements with criminal histories, the authorities aim to set a precedent for zero tolerance towards interference in the electoral process.
