Major Drug Bust in Pune: Police Confiscate 479kg of Ganja Worth Rs 2.39 Crore
In a significant crackdown on drug trafficking, the Pune Rural police executed a major operation on Saturday, seizing a massive quantity of ganja from a farm in Jalochi village near Baramati, approximately 105 kilometers from Pune. The haul, weighing 479 kilograms and valued at an estimated Rs 2.39 crore, was discovered concealed inside two locked drums.

Acting on a credible tip-off received on Saturday evening, a police team led by Sub-Inspector Rantandeep Bhandare swiftly moved to the location. The information indicated that a large consignment of ganja had been smuggled into the district and was stored in two drums at the farm. Upon arrival, the officers found the drums securely locked and placed in a secluded farmland area.
The drums were immediately transported to the police station for further inspection. When opened, they revealed 465 individual packets containing the ganja, totaling 479 kilograms. Police Inspector Shrishail Chiwadshetti of the Baramati City police confirmed the details, emphasizing the substantial market value of the confiscated drugs.

The police suspect that the ganja was smuggled into the district in anticipation of the Holi festival, a time when demand for such substances often spikes. Inspector Chiwadshetti noted that the accused likely abandoned the consignment due to intensified police measures in the Baramati area, including stringent nakabandi (checkpoint) operations, thorough vehicle checks, and enhanced night patrolling.
"The spot where the drums were kept was intentionally chosen for its seclusion, possibly to evade police detection during routine checks," Chiwadshetti explained. He added that the investigation is ongoing, with efforts focused on identifying and apprehending the individuals involved in the smuggling ring.
